Job summary

Ontario Public Service is seeking a highly skilled structural engineer to contribute to the design, inspection, rehabilitation and construction of bridges and transportation structures across Ontario. You will develop engineering standards, assess materials, and prepare technical documentation.

In this role you will participate in committees, support policy development and travel to various regions to support projects, ensuring safe and durable infrastructure for communities across the province.

Qualifications

  • You must be licensed with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) or have accreditation and will obtain PEO license as a condition of accepting this position.
  • You possess a valid driver's license or equivalent, as recognized by Ontario.

Responsibilities

  • Provide expert advice on design, inspection, repair, and construction of bridges, culverts and transportation structures.
  • Support research and development of better engineering standards, materials and methods.
  • Develop and update policies, procedures, manuals and systems for structural projects.
  • Set criteria for approving materials and products used in ministry projects.
  • Prepare technical documents and drawings for structural work using reports and manuals to propose best solutions.
  • Participate in internal and external committees to share knowledge and foster collaboration.

What you bring to the team
Mandatory requirements
  • You are licensed with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) or You currently have accreditation as a Professional Engineer in a Canadian Province or Territory, and you will obtain a Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO) license as a condition of accepting this position.
  • You possess a valid driver's license or equivalent, as recognized by the province of Ontario.
Bridge design and engineering
  • know theories, principles and practices of civil engineering with emphasis on bridge standards, design, rehabilitation, construction, evaluation and inspection
  • have practical experience in the design, rehabilitation, construction, evaluation and inspection of both simple and medium complexity bridges
  • have knowledge of codes, standards, specifications policies, Manuals and practices related to bridge design, standards, rehabilitation, inspection, evaluation and construction
  • have knowledge of structural analysis and design systems and software related to bridges
Communication, consultation and negotiation skills
  • provide advice, deliver presentations, work effectively with ministry staff and outside agencies
  • participate in various internal and external committees
  • prepare written manuals, specifications, standard drawings, reports, briefing materials and other documentation
Research, analytical and problem solving skills
  • carry out the design, rehabilitation, construction, evaluation and inspection of structures
  • develop new policies, standards, procedures, manuals, tools and models
Project management and organizational skills
  • organizational and planning skills to carry out various projects or assignments simultaneously
  • project management skills for the delivery of structural-related projects
