Job summary

City of Greater Sudbury HR is seeking a Technician I to inspect, repair, test and maintain automotive, mechanical, and construction equipment at the Facilities and Fleet Services division.

The role requires Grade XII education, a valid 310S certificate, and a DZ licence, with driving responsibilities and shift work during winter months. A strong focus on safety and report-writing is essential.

Qualifications

  • Secondary education (Grade XII) required.
  • Must obtain a Class DZ driver’s licence.
  • Valid Automotive Service Technician Certificate of Qualification (310S) required.
  • Practical experience in automotive vehicle repairs with minimal supervision.
  • Experience with diesel-powered equipment is an asset.
  • Capable of obtaining Ice-P propane certificate.
  • Capable of maintaining a valid driving record and possessing a Class G licence.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect, repair, test, and maintain all automotive, mechanical, and construction equipment.
  • Oversee and coordinate the activities of the Helper.
  • Develop and maintain knowledge of City of Greater Sudbury Health and Safety policy and applicable provincial legislation.

Shift Work Required: Yes (days/afternoons) Some night shifts required during winter season

Rate of Pay: $43.19 per hour
Afternoon Shift Premium: $1.55 per hour
Sunday Shift Premium: $2.99 per hour
Outside mechanical work: $0.62 per hour
Tool Allowance: $654.59 per year (paid July 1 each year)
Work Boots Subsidy: $350.00 (paid April 1 each year)
Driver’s Medical Examination reimbursement: $140.00 when renewing licence, as required

The start date will follow the selection process.

Main Function: Under the general supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor, this position is responsible to perform the duties of a Technician I.

Duties:

  • Inspect, repair, test, and maintain all automotive, mechanical, and construction equipment.
  • Oversee and coordinate the activities of the Helper.
  • Develop and maintain a thorough working knowledge of City of Greater Sudbury’s (CGS's) Health and Safety policy and the applicable provincial legislation listed therein.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications

Education and Training:

  • Successful completion of secondary school (Grade XII) education.
  • Must be able to acquire a Class “DZ” driver’s licence.
  • Possess and maintain a valid Automotive Service Technician Certificate of Qualification (310S).

Experience:

  • Practical experience on automotive vehicle repairs and be completely capable of carrying out all repairs with a minimum of supervision.
  • Experience on diesel powered equipment considered an asset.

Other Requirements:

  • Capable of possessing and maintaining a valid Ice-P propane certificate.
  • Capable of possessing and maintaining a valid Ozone Depletion certificate.
  • Possess a complete Master Mechanics tool kit valued at no less than $2,000.00.
  • Capable of operating some municipal and construction equipment for testing purposes.
  • Must be able to effectively complete C.M.M.S. Crew Cards.
  • Capable of using computer technology, including fleet software programs.
  • Ability to write standard legible service reports, read and understand service manuals in order to requisition necessary parts.
  • Provide, at own cost, an Employment Medical.
  • Excellent use of English; verbally and in writing.
  • Satisfactory health, attendance, and former employment history.
  • Must be physically capable of operating a vehicle safely, possess a valid Class G driver's licence, and have an acceptable driving record.
