At Arani, we believe You Deserve Great Service. We are the largest Canadian brand of electrical products to supply contractors directly, bypassing distributors, disrupting how business has traditionally been done in this market and taking on its many inefficiencies.
We are forward-thinking, ambitious, and recognized as one of the fastest-growing companies in Canada over several years. We also work closely with our sister company, Utopia Lighting, a US lighting manufacturer based in California. Help us grow our reach and expand our successful footprint globally.
Role Summary
The Technical Support Specialist – Lighting is the person our teams turn to when a project needs technical answers. Based in Montreal and reporting to the Director of Engineering, you support both Arani (Canada) and Utopia Lighting (United States).
Your two core jobs: when a sales rep sends us a lighting schedule specifying a competitor's part numbers, you identify the equivalent Arani or Utopia products ("crosses"); and when a project needs a photometric layout, you build the lighting simulation in AGi32 and deliver a clear, professional report. You will also answer day-to-day technical questions from reps, contractors, and our inside sales teams.
You do not need to arrive knowing our catalogue or AGi32. We train. What you need is a solid electrical or lighting foundation, real attention to detail, and the drive to become the technical reference for two growing brands.
Key Responsibilities
Product crosses and equivalencies (training provided)
- Review lighting schedules and specifications submitted by sales reps that call out competitor part numbers, and identify the equivalent Arani or Utopia Lighting product for each line.
- Compare the specifications that matter: lumens, wattage, CCT, CRI, distribution, voltage, dimming, mounting, IP/IK ratings, certifications (cUL/UL, DLC, BAA/BABA where applicable).
- Produce clean, accurate cross-reference documents that sales can send straight to the customer, and clearly flag where no true equivalent exists or where a substitution needs approval.
- Build and maintain our internal cross-reference library so each cross makes the next one faster.
Lighting simulations (training provided)
- Build photometric layouts in AGi32 from drawings, plans, and project requirements: indoor, outdoor, area, and site lighting.
- Select fixtures, apply IES photometric files, and verify results against the project's target light levels, uniformity, and applicable standards.
Technical support
- Answer technical questions from sales reps, contractors, and inside sales on product specifications, applications, and compatibility and help coordinate RMAs and Replacements
- Prepare bills of materials and quotations.
- Feed what you learn from the field back to Engineering: recurring questions, spec gaps, and product improvement opportunities.
- Handle applications for lighting rebate programs and verify product eligibility
Requirements
- Advanced AI literacy
- Interest in electricity, electrical engineering technology, lighting, architecture technology
- Ability to multitask and handle a large work volume under pressure
- Meticulous attention to detail. A wrong cross or a wrong light level costs the customer real money.
- Comfortable reading construction drawings, lighting schedules, and product specification sheets.
- Clear written and verbal communication; you can explain a technical trade-off to a non-technical salesperson.
- Fluent English, written and spoken. While French is the language of our Montreal workplace English is required because this role supports Utopia Lighting's US sales reps and customers daily, and serves Arani customers outside Quebec.
Assets
- Experience with AGi32, DIALux, or Visual lighting design software (major asset).
- Knowledge of lighting technologies and the lighting industry: LED, photometrics, controls, DLC/cUL listings.
- IES Lighting Certification (LC) or coursework toward it (major asset).
- AutoCAD or Revit experience.
- Experience in a lighting manufacturer, lighting agency, or electrical distributor technical or quotations role.
- Experience with an ERP (SAP Business One) or CRM (Salesforce).
