Job summary

The National Research Council Canada (NRC) is seeking a Technical Officer to support Sample Management and the Mammalian Cell Expression sections. You will manage samples, maintain inventory, label and ship materials, and use LIMS for routine tasks.

The role requires collaboration across teams and adherence to biosafety and SOPs. Responsibilities include maintaining equipment, preparing reagents, and ensuring safe handling of biological materials.

Qualifications

• College diploma or university degree in sciences or equivalent.
• High school diploma with related experience may be considered.
• Experience providing technical support in research laboratories.
• Experience operating and maintaining laboratory instruments (autoclaves, freezers, incubators).
• Experience with sample management and inventory documentation would be an asset.
• Aseptic techniques and biosafety knowledge would be an asset.

The role

The Human Health Therapeutics (HHT) Research Centre has the mandate to support economic development through innovation in health care, including innovative therapies. The research centre has a strong track record of industry collaborations, and is a major contributor to the prosperity of Canada’s small and medium enterprises (SMEs). The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting the Sample Management and Mammalian Cell Expression teams.

As part of the sample management team, the Technical Officer will:

• Manage biological samples and maintain sample inventory;
• Coordinate and follow up on labelling, storage, aliquoting and shipping of samples;
• Prepare and distribute samples for internal users and external clients;
• Use laboratory inventory management software (LIMS) for simple actions (create boxes in LIMS and scan inventory into boxes);
• Assist with the reception and disposal of biological samples in accordance with established procedures;

As part of the Mammalian Cell Expression Section, the Technical Officer will:

• Help support the maintenance and upkeep of equipment for cell culture, including incubators and biological safety cabinets.
• Support continuity of research activities by maintaining an inventory of essential cell culture reagents, sterilizing material for cell culture, preparing solutions for decontamination and disposing of waste and recyclable materials.
• Help to undertake tasks demanding significant physical effort, including regular replacement of compressed gas cylinders and monitoring the functionality of fridges and freezers.
• Serve as a point of contact serving several functional teams, responding to operational needs, such as overseeing minor repairs or making purchases, in a timely manner.

Screening criteria

Applicants must demonstrate within the content of their application that they meet the following screening criteria in order to be given further consideration as candidates:

Education

College diploma or university degree in sciences or equivalent.

High school diploma with related experience would be considered.

• Basic experience in providing technical support in research laboratories (academic or biotechnology or food industry).
• Basic experience in the safe operation and maintenance of laboratory instruments such as autoclaves, frezeers and incubators.
• Experience in sample management and inventory documentation would be an asset.
• Experience handling biological samples using aseptic techniques and following biosafety procedures would be considered an asset.

Condition of employment

Reliability Status

For a Reliability Status, verification of background information over a period of 5 years is required.

Candidates will be assessed on the basis of the following criteria:

• Ability to prepare chemical solutions (eg. decontamination solutions or buffers) in a laboratory setting following standard operating procedures (SOPs).
• Basic knowledge of aseptic techniques and biosafety practices for the handling of biological samples would be an asset.
• Basic knowledge of computer software such as Microsoft Office, including Excel and Word.
