Job summary

The Government of Alberta is seeking a Provincial Fleet and Mobile Asset Specialist to lead the Forestry Division's fleet program, overseeing readiness, modernization, safety, and performance.

You will supervise the lifecycle of over 600 vehicles and 200 specialized assets that support forestry and wildfire operations across Alberta. This role requires strategic leadership and collaboration with procurement to ensure a reliable, cost-effective fleet.

Qualifications

• Two-year technical diploma in heavy duty mechanic or related field with six years related experience.
• Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of: 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.
• Professional designation such as CAFM, CPFP, P.Eng. or equivalent.
• Experience supporting wildfire management, emergency response, forestry operations, government operations, or other specialized field-based programs.
• Knowledge of fleet management software, business intelligence tools, asset management systems, and data analytics platforms.

Responsibilities

• Leading strategic fleet lifecycle planning, modernization initiatives, and long-term capital investment strategies.
• Analyzing fleet utilization, performance, and lifecycle costs to support evidence-based decision-making.
• Forecasting multi-year capital requirements and guiding procurement decisions for specialized mobile assets.
• Optimizing province-wide fleet allocation and deployment through advanced analytics and utilization data.
• Developing and maintaining provincial fleet standards, upfitting specifications, and specialized vehicle designs.
• Engineering custom equipment solutions to address unique operational needs.
• Collaborating with procurement teams, vendors, manufacturers, and stakeholders to ensure fleet standards are achieved.
• Managing province-wide preventative maintenance and service contracts to maximize fleet reliability and uptime.
• Auditing repair quality, maintenance practices, and compliance with mechanical and safety standards.
• Establishing operator training requirements, safety compliance standards, and regulatory programs for specialized fleet operations.

Role Responsibilities

Are you a strategic fleet management professional with a passion for innovation, operational excellence, and public service? Alberta Forestry is seeking a Provincial Fleet and Mobile Asset Specialist to provide leadership over one of the province's most critical operational programs. In this role, you will oversee the readiness, modernization, safety, and performance of a fleet of more than 600 vehicles and 200 specialized wheeled and tracked assets that support forestry and wildfire operations across Alberta. This is a unique opportunity to influence provincial fleet strategy, shape specialized equipment design, and ensure frontline teams have the tools they need when they need them most.

Reporting to the Director of Warehousing, Facilities, and Technical Services, the Provincial Fleet and Mobile Asset Specialist provides provincial oversight, strategic direction, and operational coordination for the Forestry Division's fleet and mobile asset program. This role leads the technical, financial, and operational performance of the program while supervising fleet analytics and coordination functions. Combining advanced mechanical expertise with strategic business management, the position is responsible for the full lifecycle of specialized vehicles and equipment, ensuring a safe, reliable, cost-effective, and modern fleet that supports forestry and wildfire response operations across Alberta.

Your key responsibilities include, but is not limited to:

• Leading strategic fleet lifecycle planning, modernization initiatives, and long-term capital investment strategies.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:
Two-year technical diploma in heavy duty mechanic, power systems technician, gas compression technician or a related field plus six years related experience; or equivalent as described below.

Equivalency:
Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:
1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
1 year of experience for 1 year of education.

Assets:

• Professional designation such as Certified Automotive Fleet Manager (CAFM), Certified Public Fleet Professional (CPFP), Professional Engineer (P.Eng.), or equivalent.


• Experience supporting wildfire management, emergency response, forestry operations, government operations, or other specialized field-based programs.


• Knowledge of fleet management software, business intelligence tools, asset management systems, and data analytics platforms.


• Experience managing complex provincial, multi-site, or geographically dispersed fleet operations.


• Advanced project management, procurement, contract management, or strategic planning experience.

This permanent full-time position is based on a 36.25-hour work week, Monday to Friday. However, the nature of wildfire operations requires flexibility, and overtime, travel outside the home area, and extended work hours may be required with little or no notice in response to operational needs and wildfire activity.
