Description du poste

Welcome to CNOOC International. We are a global energy company and subsidiary of CNOOC Limited with a vision of delivering safe, sustainable energy for all.

CNOOC International, the international division of CNOOC Limited, is a global energy company with operations in Asia, Africa, the Americas, the Middle East and Europe. Our successful growth as an upstream oil and gas producer has been achieved by consistently finding and developing world‑class assets.

Our business is focused on safely exploring and producing from conventional offshore, unconventional and oil sands assets. As part of the CNOOC Group of companies, which span the entire energy supply chain, our size and capability create a competitive advantage that ensures we deliver long‑term value.

In Canada, CNOOC International has oil sands assets in Long Lake, located in northern Alberta just south of Fort McMurray, which is a SAGD and partial Upgrader operation with production capacity of 85,000 barrels of bitumen a day. We also have interest in several other oil sands projects, including Hangingstone, operated by Greenfire Resources Operating Corporation and Syncrude’s oil sands mining upgrading facility. In addition to our oil sands business, we have shale gas land in Northeast British Columbia, a power station in Balzac, Alberta, and interest in a wind farm in southern Alberta. Calgary is our regional corporate office for all North America.

Bold ideas, diverse perspectives, and the determination to fuel our success are what set us apart. Therefore, we are seeking a Technical Data Analyst to join our growing team in Calgary, Alberta. This dynamic role will be instrumental in ensuring the subsurface data that supports every forecast, reserves booking, regulatory submission, and development decision is accurately found, cleaned, loaded, and kept in sync across a growing SAGD portfolio. Increasingly, it will also automate these processes so they can scale. The role sets the data processes and standards for Oil Sands that others, including Americas Exploration, are expected to follow.

Your Background

Required

  • Post‑secondary education in Geoscience, GIS/Geomatics, Engineering, Technology, or a related field.
  • 6+ years of experience in data management and optimization related to oil and gas exploration, development, production or operations.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across cross‑functional technical teams.
  • Comfort with scripting (Python, R or SQL) sufficient to automate repetitive data work.
  • Experience uploading and maintaining data in GIS, Petrel Studio and Geolog.
  • Strong proficiency with database management: querying and accessing stored records across the organization.
  • Proficiency with AI tools (e.g., Claude) to streamline and enhance data workflows and reports.

Preferred

  • Working knowledge of the upstream SAGD business model, and awareness of data and workflows across geology, geophysics, petrophysics, reservoir engineering and development engineering.
  • Petrotechnical data management (loading and QC, running scripts, calculating surveys), geospatial data analysis, database management and data integration, data engineering and automation.
  • Fluency with O&G data formats (.las, .csv, .shp, .sgy and similar). Software: Power BI, Web Mapping, Denodo, Excel.

Desired Attributes

  • Genuine curiosity about data engineering and analytics: wants to know why the number is wrong, not just that it is. Adapts to new software and tools.
  • Collaborative; builds networks across disciplines and offices; shares knowledge and lifts colleagues’ work.
  • Resolves issues independently with minimal oversight; proactively pursues improvements; willing to admit uncertainty and seek feedback.
  • Strong critical thinking; balances multiple assignments and frequent unplanned requests, prioritizing well and communicating trade‑offs.
  • Honesty, integrity and a strong personal commitment to Health, Safety and Environment (HSE).
Your Role with Our Team

Engineering & Geoscience Data Support and Data Management

  • Provide data support for business‑critical work: forecasting, budgeting, strategic planning, reserves, project reviews, competitor analyses and development planning.
  • Handle diverse datasets: geoscience (Petrel / Petrel Studio), geospatial (GIS, Web Mapping), petrophysics (Geolog), well and facility measurement (Honeywell), observation‑well instrumentation and well header data (PPDM).
  • Keep major subsurface applications and reference tables in sync so the same well means the same thing in every system. For example, when an observation well first licensed as an OSC well is reclassified, the identifier change must be carried through every dependent table and report.
  • Support the Well Pair ID table jointly with Technical Records. Its completeness and accuracy directly limit forecast quality.
  • Support winter drilling programs end to end: core and open‑hole log intake, directional survey loading, and data transfer between Calgary, site and Beijing. Data must be usable within about one business day of receipt.

Data Optimization & Automation

  • Design and implement durable data strategies with project teams. Fix historical discrepancies rather than working around them.
  • Progressively automate recurring loading, QC and reconciliation tasks. Move manual processes into scripted, version‑controlled workflows that follow the team’s coding standards.
  • Own the observation‑well data pipeline (200+ wellpairs, 1,500+ sensors): ETL, sensor depth and formation QC, issue tracking and visualization, including mapping PHD tags to Denodo values so sensor data reaches reports correctly.
  • Drive standard well names and identifiers across stakeholders and downstream reports.
  • Build and maintain advanced interactive reports (e.g., Power BI, markdown), data models and calculations for reservoir surveillance, well optimization, lookbacks, benchmarking and regulatory monitoring.
  • Support engineering teams’ analytics/reporting while they build their own capability.

IT Integration & Project Support

  • Strengthen the connection between Engineering, Geoscience and IT systems. Partner with Technical Records and Corporate Services on sustainable, retrievable data storage.
  • Manage and oversee seismic data: reconcile owned 2D and 3D survey coverage with references and storage locations. Set standards, QC and priorities as hands‑on loading moves to planned central data‑support resources.
  • Move subsurface data from Petrel Studio into GIS layers and feature classes (e.g., the horizontal well status layer, checked against the IHS well‑path layer to find discrepancies).
  • Provide backup capability for spatial and reporting workflows, including the Project Data Scientist’s forecasting support tools, so the team never depends on a single person.
  • Provide direct data support to major projects: well‑to‑geo intersects, overburden analysis, surface‑constraint reviews, trajectory data coordination between drilling contractors and Geoscience, well lists for regulatory and royalty submissions, and data packages for external geomechanical and simulation consultants.

Standing Responsibilities

  • Maintain subsurface and data science databases: GIS/SDE and portal features, Denodo, LoggerNet, DCS, PHD/Uniformance, PPDM, seismic storage and shared‑drive data management.
  • Make effective use of support services (corporate GIS, IT, external application vendors) rather than absorbing all work internally.

The opportunities are limitless when you join our team. Our employees are encouraged to drive their development, enhancing their career through experiences, exposure, and education. A mentoring program, on‑demand e‑Learning courses, and formal training opportunities are all ways in which CNOOC International supports your career growth.
