Job summary

SLR Consulting in Calgary/Edmonton is seeking a Team Leader – Ecology & Biodiversity for the Prairies region. You will lead and develop the ecology team, oversee delivery, and drive business development while ensuring high-quality projects in line with provincial and federal environmental legislation.

Qualifications

  • A minimum of 10 years of ecology experience with team leadership and project management.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, or related field; Master’s considered an asset.
  • Registration or eligibility for registration as a Professional Biologist (P. Biol.) with the Alberta Society of Professional Biologists.
  • Ability to lead, mentor, and develop technical staff and manage performance.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with stakeholders and regulators.
  • Knowledge of Prairie ecological conditions and regulatory requirements.
  • Experience planning ecological assessments, baseline studies, monitoring, and oversight on multidisciplinary projects.
  • Experience in power/oil & gas sector projects is an asset.
  • Excellent technical writing and ability to produce regulatory submissions.
  • Demonstrated project management including budgeting, scheduling, and resource allocation.
  • Experience building client relationships and contributing to proposals and business development.

Other locations will be considered.**Role**Reporting to the Practice Manager, the Team Leader – Ecology & Biodiversity (Prairies Region) will lead and develop our Prairies ecology team, combining people leadership with technical project delivery and business development. You will oversee team resourcing, delivery quality, commercial performance, and professional development while building a collaborative, capable, and engaged team.Working closely with the Practice Manager, Practice Leader, and other regional Team Leaders, you will help strengthen our technical capabilities, build client relationships, and grow our ecology and biodiversity services across the Prairies. This role offers the opportunity to shape the team’s development and regional growth while remaining actively involved in projects.**Responsibilities:*** Leads team resourcing and capacity planning, serving as the first point of contact for staffing needs and collaborating with other Team Leaders and the Practice Manager to balance workloads and address delivery priorities.* Sets clear expectations and leads by example, modeling and promoting SLR’s cultural principles.* Supports the Practice Manager and Practice Leader in implementing strategic actions to grow the Practice’s market position and technical capabilities.* Monitors team workload, utilization, and project financial performance with the Practice Manager, identifying risks early and supporting corrective actions.* Manages performance proactively, addressing issues promptly and constructively with the support of the Practice Manager/Practice Leader.* Coaches, mentors, and develops team members, overseeing individual development and training plans that build consulting, technical, and leadership skills.* Supports recruitment efforts and ensures timely onboarding with clarity on systems, processes and standards.* Builds and maintains key client relationships, providing technical leadership and overseeing responsive, high-quality project delivery.* Contributes to business development, including preparing proposals, presentations, and bids, and supporting market growth initiatives.* Manages multidisciplinary projects, including scope development, budgeting, scheduling, resourcing, and quality assurance throughout project delivery.* Prepares and reviews technical reports and regulatory submissions, providing technical oversight and ensuring alignment with provincial and federal environmental legislation (e.g., *Fisheries Act*, *Species at Risk Act*, *Impact Assessment Act*).* Fosters a positive culture across the Practice Area to protect the health, safety, and wellbeing of the team, ensuring risks are appropriately identified and managed in line with SLR’s Key Safety Principles.**Working @ SLR**With us, there is no doubt you’ll grow your subject-matter expertise and industry knowledge.
