Job summary

SLR in British Columbia seeks a Team Leader – Ecology & Biodiversity (Pacific Region) to lead a defined ecology team within the Canadian Pacific regional practice. You will oversee resourcing, delivery quality, and client relationships while aligning with the Practice Area strategy.

With 10+ years as an ecologist, you will drive recruitment, recruit-capacity planning, and coaching. The role emphasizes technical writing, regulatory submissions, and project oversight across large multidisciplinary

Qualifications

  • 10+ years as an Ecologist in environmental consulting.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Ecology or Natural Sciences; MSc is an asset.
  • Registered Professional Biologist in BC or eligible.
  • Experience in consulting environment and ability to engage internal staff, clients, regulators.
  • Strong communication, collaboration and project delivery skills.
  • Experience with environmental assessment, baseline studies, monitoring and multidisciplinary projects.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the defined ecology team and act as first point of contact for resourcing and performance.
  • Support delivery of strategic actions to grow the Practice’s market position.
  • Mentor and develop team members; oversee development plans and training.
  • Oversee recruitment and timely onboarding with clear systems and standards.
  • Manage multidisciplinary projects including scope, budgeting, scheduling and quality assurance.
  • Prepare technical reports and regulatory submissions in line with BC/Canada environmental legislation.

Job description

Role

As our new Team Leader – Ecology & Biodiversity (Pacific Region), you will play an important role on a team whose work is essential to achieving this goal.

The Team Leader is the accountable leader for a defined team within SLR’s Canadian Pacific Regional Practice Area (typically responsible for 5 or more team members), providing leadership and operational oversight. The Team Leader supports resourcing, delivery quality, commercial performance and people development in alignment with the Practice Area strategy. They partner with other regional Team Leaders, Practice Manager, and Practice Leader to translate strategy into execution, leading team performance and building a cohesive, capable, and engaged team.

Bringing experience in a consulting environment, the Team Leader demonstrates ability to work with people, manage resources and work within a team to deliver shared goals, including technical, commercial, and cultural. Success in the role is underpinned by strong skills in communication, collaboration, and project delivery. Reporting to the Practice Manager, the Team Leader is a key member of the Business Unit and regional leadership team, contributing to the overall success and direction of the organization.

Responsibilities
  • Manages the team as the first point of contact for all resourcing requirements, issues, and opportunities.
  • Sets clear expectations and leads by example, modeling and promoting SLR’s cultural principles.
  • Supports the Practice Manager and Practice Leader on the delivery of strategic actions to grow the Practice’s market position and capability.
  • Manages performance proactively, addressing issues promptly and constructively with the support of the Practice Manager/Practice Leader.
  • Manages resourcing and capacity planning for the team and collaborates with other Team Leaders and the Practice Manager to balance work where necessary.
  • Coaches, mentors, and develops team members. Oversees the development of personal development plans and training plans covering consulting and technical skills.
  • Supports recruitment efforts and ensures timely onboarding with clarity on systems, processes and standards.
  • Builds and maintains key client relationships and executes priority handling of technical work for these clients in the Practice Area.
  • Contributes to business development, including preparing proposals, presentations, and bids, and supporting market growth initiatives.
  • Manages multidisciplinary projects, including scope development, budgeting, scheduling, resourcing, and quality assurance throughout project delivery.
  • Develops and oversees technical reports and regulatory submissions, ensuring alignment with provincial and federal environmental legislation (e.g., Fisheries Act, Species at Risk Act, Impact Assessment Act).
  • Fosters a positive culture across the Practice Area to protect the health, safety, and wellbeing of the team, ensuring risks are appropriately identified and managed in line with SLR’s Key Safety Principles.

  • The salary range for this position is $90,000 - $135,000. Final agreed upon compensation will be commensurate with individual education, professional designation, experience, internal parity, and location.

Qualifications/Education/Memberships
  • Professional experience (10+ years) as an Ecologist in the environmental consulting industry.
  • Bachelor’s degree (B.Sc.), in Biology, Ecology, or Natural Sciences; a Master’s degree (M.Sc.) is considered an asset.
  • Accreditation as a Registered Professional Biologist through the College of Applied Biologists of BC.
  • Experience and ability to work with people within a technical consulting or professional services environment.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with experience engaging internal staff, clients, contractors, Indigenous members, and regulators.
  • Ability to engage, develop, and retain team members.
  • Experience supporting environmental assessment, baseline evaluation, monitoring, and oversight of large multidisciplinary projects.
  • Excellent technical writing, reporting, and research skills, including experience conducting technical reviews.
  • Demonstrated project coordination and management skills, including project planning, schedule and budget preparation, project implementation, and the ability to produce deliverables on time.
