Job summary

Burkett & Co. Chartered Professional Accountants in Victoria, BC, is seeking a Tax Manager to lead our tax team and deliver high-level advisory services to private companies, trusts, and high-net-worth individuals.

This full-time role reports to the partners and requires strong Canadian tax expertise. You will mentor junior staff, review returns, and collaborate with partners to implement tailored planning strategies, remain current with tax developments, and help clients meet their financial

Qualifications

  • Minimum 4+ years of progressive experience in Canadian public practice, with a focus on compilations, tax compliance, tax planning for private corporations and high-net-worth individuals.
  • Strong technical knowledge in Canadian corporate and personal tax, with exposure to trust and estate planning, and corporate reorganizations.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with ability to present complex information clearly to clients and the team.

Responsibilities

  • Manage a portfolio of clients primarily consisting of private companies, owner-managed businesses, trusts, and high-net-worth individuals.
  • Help implement tailored tax planning strategies, including financial planning, corporate reorganizations, estate freezes, succession planning, and trust structuring.
  • Review corporate, personal, and trust tax returns prepared by junior staff; ensure quality control and compliance with current tax legislation.
  • Review year-end compilation engagements prepared by junior staff; ensure compliance with SoQM and CSRS 4200.
  • Collaborate with internal and external professionals to deliver integrated solutions.

Job Overview

We are seeking a Tax Manager to join Burkett & Co.'s talented team. The successful candidate will reflect our firm's core values while providing high level managerial support to all members of our team as well as our clients. The successful candidate will be able to understand complex accounting and tax concepts and enjoy being a technical resource for our clients and the firm. This is a full-time position reporting directly to the partners.

Responsibilities
  • Manage a portfolio of clients primarily consisting of private companies, owner-managed businesses, trusts, and high-net-worth individuals.
  • Work closely with the partners to help implement tailored tax planning strategies, including financial planning, corporate reorganizations, estate freezes, succession planning, and trust structuring.
  • Help identify opportunities for tax planning and work with the partners and clients to align tax strategies with broader financial and family goals.
  • Review corporate, personal, and trust tax returns prepared by junior staff; ensure quality control and compliance with current tax legislation.
  • Review year-end compilation engagements prepared by junior staff; ensure compliance with system of quality management (SoQM) and CSRS 4200.
  • Support clients with CRA reviews, prepare tax election forms, and other supplemental tax filings.
  • Collaborate with internal and external professionals (e.g., legal, investment management, banking, insurance advisors) to deliver integrated solutions.
  • Act as a main point of contact for clients, building long-term, trusted relationships.
  • Assist firm with the application of technical accounting and tax concepts and related research.
  • Mentor and develop junior team members through training, coaching, and formal review processes.
  • Stay up to date on changes in Canadian tax law and regulatory developments affecting private entities and individuals.
Job Requirements
  • Minimum 4+ years of progressive experience in Canadian public practice, with a focus on compilations, tax compliance, tax planning for private corporations and high-net-worth individuals.
  • Strong technical knowledge in Canadian corporate and personal tax, with direct experience and exposure to trust and estate planning, and corporate reorganizations.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with an ability to present complex information clearly to clients and the team.
  • Registration or completion of In-Depth Tax Course is highly valued but not required.

  • Full-time (Monday to Friday), on-site with flexibility to work from home on Fridays
