Job summary

Honeywell Aerospace in Cambridge, Ontario is seeking a Systems Engineer I to contribute to the development and maintenance of optical and electrical systems. You will build prototypes from clean sheet designs, troubleshoot, repair, and test optical components across labs and customer hardware, and support the engineering team with opto-mechanical and opto-electrical expertise.

Qualifications

  • Technical diploma or degree in a relevant program from an accredited college or university.
  • 1-3 years of experience in lab-based optics and optical setups in a test environment.
  • Hands-on experience with building and testing opto-mechanical and opto-electrical setups and systems.
  • Knowledge of opto-mechanical components and systems.
  • Knowledge of opto-electronic components and systems.
  • Understanding of electrical harnessing, experience in soldering and creation of harnessing, and a willingness to develop and execute these skills.
  • Ability to execute, edit, and write test scripts in at least one of Matlab or Python.

Responsibilities

  • Execute build and test of opto-mechanical and opto-electrical systems based on drawings and procedural documentation.
  • Setup of test equipment, instrumentation, and perform various testing activities on breadboard units, prototypes, and production units.
  • Operate optical measurement tools including Zygo interferometers, optical power meters, lasers, and cameras.
  • Develop automation scripting for lab equipment.
  • Read harness drawings and perform wiring, soldering, and test activities.
  • Collaborate with engineering disciplines to resolve issues.
  • Troubleshoot optical systems using measurement tools to test performance.
  • Conduct tests with new materials and processes to generate data for specs.
  • Draft procedures and capture laboratory notes for changes.
  • Make sketches and markups to communicate changes.
  • Improve fixtures, devices, methods, and procedures.
  • Provide technical support to the team.
  • Grow technical knowledge in a collaborative, customer-focused environment.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of opto-mechanical and opto-electronic systems.

Responsibilities
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Execute build and test of opto-mechanical and opto-electrical systems based on drawings and procedural documentation. Includes both lab-based systems and customer deliverable hardware.
  • Setup of test equipment, monitoring and measuring instruments, and other apparatus, and perform a wide variety of low-level and sub-assembly testing activities on breadboard units, prototype units and production units., electronic circuitry, and cables/harnesses.
  • Operate various optical measurement tools including Zygo interferometers, optical power meters, lasers, and scientific cameras.
  • Execute and contribute to the development of automation scripting of opto-electronic and opto-mechanical lab equipment.
  • Read harness drawings and execute build, including wiring and soldering, and test, including safe-to-mate procedures and pinout verification.
  • Collaborate with various engineering disciplines to identify and resolve technical issues.
  • Troubleshoot opto-mechanical and opto-electrical systems and equipment using measurement and diagnostic tools to test performance.
  • Conduct tests and experiments with new materials, equipment, and processes to develop data for specification call-out or to determine suitability of a material for specific applications.
  • Draft procedures and record laboratory notes and other details to capture relevant details.
  • Make sketches and marks up drawings as needed to communicate proposed changes.
  • Improve and refine existing fixtures, devices, methods, and process steps or procedures, implementing changes as necessary.
  • Provide technical support to the engineering team.
  • Grow and develop your technical knowledge in a team-based culture focused on innovation and customer satisfaction.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of opto-mechanical and opto-electronic systems and products.

The Honeywell building is a controlled goods program environment. Candidates must be eligible for CGP and CSP clearance.

Qualifications
YOU MUST HAVE
  • Technical diploma or degree in a relevant program from an accredited college or university.
  • 1-3 years of experience in lab-based optics and optical setups in a test environment.
  • Hands-on experience with building and testing opto-mechanical and opto-electrical setups and systems.
  • Knowledge of opto-mechanical components and systems.
  • Knowledge of opto-electronic components and systems.
  • Understanding of electrical harnessing, experience in soldering and creation of harnessing, and a willingness to develop and execute these skills.
  • Ability to execute, edit, and write test scripts in at least one of Matlab or Python.
WE VALUE
  • Experience with fiber optical systems.
  • Experience with lasers, specifically class 4 laser safety.
  • Experience with environmental testing, ESD, and clean room testing.
  • Experience with electrical systems.
  • Experience with mechanical modelling (CAD).
  • Experience in testing and calibrating electronic components and equipment.
  • An understanding of industry standard processes.
  • Familiarity with lab equipment such as optical power meters, integrating spheres, light sources (lasers and broadband), multimeters, and oscilloscopes.

  • Good interpersonal skills with ability to work effectively with other individuals in a team setting as well as with customers to define requirements and provide support.
  • Experience using SAP.

    The annual base salary range for this position is $62,000 - $85,000 in Cambridge, Ontario. Please note that this salary information serves as a general guideline.
