Job summary

CRWS Montréal is seeking a System Mechanical Engineer to define, integrate, validate, and support onboard mechanical systems for rolling stock projects. You will collaborate with senior engineers to ensure safety, quality, and regulatory compliance across lifecycle stages.

Responsibilities include defining system requirements, coordinating interfaces, performing risk analyses, supporting tests, and preparing documentation. Familiarity with CAD tools and bilingual English/French is a plus.

Job description

As a System Mechanical Engineer, you will support the definition, integration, validation, and lifecycle support of mechanical and onboard systems for passenger and freight rolling stock projects.

Working closely with senior engineers and multidisciplinary teams, you will contribute to system integration activities, technical coordination, validation, testing, and engineering documentation while ensuring compliance with safety, quality, and regulatory requirements.

Key responsibilities

Systems Definition & Integration

  • Support the development of system requirements, interfaces, and performance criteria for onboard systems such as HVAC, braking, pneumatics, fuel systems, and mechanical interfaces.
  • Coordinate interfaces between mechanical, electrical, structural, and software engineering teams.
  • Prepare and maintain system documentation, including Interface Control Documents (ICDs) and system descriptions.

Technical Analysis & Risk Management

  • Support functional performance assessments and system-level risk analyses, including FMEA and hazard analyses.
  • Assist with validating designs against applicable standards and regulations (APTA, AAR, EN, UIC, Transport Canada).
  • Review supplier and subcontractor technical documentation.
Verification, Validation & Testing
  • Support test planning, verification, and validation activities.
  • Participate in testing, commissioning, troubleshooting, and in-service support activities.
  • Assist in root-cause analysis and implementation of corrective actions.
Compliance & Collaboration
  • Ensure engineering deliverables comply with applicable standards and quality requirements.
  • Prepare technical reports, calculations, and certification-related documentation.
  • Collaborate with project managers, designers, production teams, suppliers, and clients.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and engineering best practices.
What We’re Looking For
Education
  • Diploma or degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
Experience & Technical Competencies
  • 3-7 years of experience in mechanical engineering, system integration, or transportation-related projects.
  • Experience with rolling stock systems or complex mechanical assemblies is considered an asset.
  • Familiarity with system integration and multidisciplinary engineering coordination.
  • Familiarity with railway standards and regulatory environments (APTA, AAR, EN, UIC, Transport Canada) is an asset.
  • Experience with rail braking systems (pneumatic or electro-pneumatic architectures and components) is considered an asset.
  • Experience with rail fuel systems and onboard power generation systems is an asset.
  • Proficiency with CAD tools and engineering documentation practices.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and technical problem-solving skills.
  • Bilingualism (English/French) is considered an asset.
