Job summary

Nokia is seeking a System Design Engineer to join our Ottawa team. You will analyze carrier networking environments and craft optimized solutions, collaborating with Marketing, PLM, Sales, Optical, and Software Engineering to ensure seamless network design and deployment.

You will support RFP/RFQ responses and provide field support for planning and deployment activities, with emphasis on DWDM, IP/MPLS/GMPLS/Ethernet and optical link budget engineering.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree required; PhD preferred in a related field.
  • 5+ years of relevant industry experience, with 3+ years in network design/optimization tools.
  • Strong knowledge of carrier-class networking: WDM, IP/MPLS/GMPLS/Ethernet.

Responsibilities

  • Support RFP/RFQ Network Design responses and optimization.
  • Serve as Subject Matter Expert for field team guidance on planning and deployment.
  • Develop technical specifications; evaluate vendor/internal options for best products.
  • Design optimal architecture for new products using network transition strategies.
  • Create tools to empower sales engineers in designing network responses.
  • Analyze economic aspects of network designs and roadmap features.

Job description

We are seeking a talented and experienced System Design Engineer to join our dynamic team at Nokia. In this role, you will analyze carrier networking environments and create optimized solutions. You will collaborate closely with multiple departments, including Marketing, PLM, Sales, Optical, and Software Engineering, to ensure seamless network design and implementation. Your expertise will support RFP/RFQ responses and provide field support for network planning and deployment activities.

How You Will Contribute And What You Will Learn
  • Support RFP/RFQ Network Design responses and network optimization, ensuring accurate and timely submissions.
  • Serve as a Subject Matter Expert, providing guidance and expertise to the field team for network planning and deployment.
  • Research and develop technical specifications, evaluating vendor and internal options to determine the best products and facilities.
  • Utilize network transition strategies to design optimal architecture for new products and platforms.
  • Create tools and resources to empower sales engineers in designing and optimizing network responses.
  • Conduct economic analysis of various networking models and emerging technologies, assessing their impact on business cases.
  • Analyze network designs and economic implications of roadmap features, contributing to strategic decision-making.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Marketing, PLM, Sales, and Engineering, to align on network solutions.
  • Stay updated on industry trends and standards, ensuring our solutions remain cutting‑edge and competitive.
Key Skills And Experience
  • Master's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or Physics is required; a PhD degree is preferred.
  • 5+ years of relevant industry experience, with a strong preference for 3+ years of experience in 3rd party network design or optimization tools.
  • Working knowledge of carrier‑class networking architecture, including WDM, IP/MPLS/GMPLS/Ethernet technologies.
  • Functional experience in sales engineering or product management is essential.
  • Proficiency in writing scripts using Excel, Matlab, Python, or similar tools.
  • Experience with commercial planning tools such as OPNET, VPISystems, RSoft, Wandl, or Cariden is highly desirable.
  • Strong technical skills in Optical Link Budget Engineering, Non‑Linear simulation, and Layer 1 networking.
  • Prior experience in Provisioning, Installation, and Testing of DWDM systems is an advantage.
  • Excellent scripting, Excel, and SQL skills, along with familiarity with Relational Databases and programming languages like Perl, C++, Java, or Visual Basic.
  • Ability to work independently, collaborate with remote teams, and demonstrate strong problem‑solving and analytical skills.
