Job summary

City of Regina is seeking a qualified Facilities Operator II to monitor the mechanical operation of all swimming pools and support preventative maintenance, ensuring water quality meets health and industry standards.

The role requires training staff, coordinating repairs, and maintaining regulatory compliance across multiple facilities. A Level II Pool Operator’s certificate and First Aid are required, with additional certifications an asset.

Qualifications

• Grade 12 and pool operation knowledge; two years related experience incl. one year as Facility Operator I.
• Knowledge of water chemistry, chemicals handling and safety regulations.
• Ability to train and supervise staff and liaise with other departments.

Position Summary

In an environment that supports continuous improvement and under the supervision of the Facilities Foreman II, Regional Sports and Recreation or the Sports and Recreation Facilities Manager, this employee is responsible for monitoring the complete mechanical operation of all swimming pools, assisting in the facility\'s preventative maintenance programme, and is responsible for ensuring water quality meets all health and accepted industry standards.

In doing this, the employee will monitor all testing procedures, all chemical applications, any corrections which must be carried out to maintain chemically balanced water. The work of this classification differs from a Facility Operator I by the expertise required, the numerous different locations of work, and the greater complexity of the work performed, including training of all Facility Operator I\'s involved in swimming pool operations. Employee must maintain a rapport with the facility programmers, Facility Foreman II and Foreman I. He/she must ensure adherence to all Health Department regulations in all City owned swimming pools. This employee will be the department\'s main liaison with the Public Health Department and the Municipal Engineering Department.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

• Trains staff in water chemistry, pool filtration and chemical application required to chemically balance pool water, including proper chlorine handling techniques; trains staff in proper care and procedures for automatic controls and the feed systems, proper swimming pool operations and procedures and the pool\'s filtration system.
• Assists in the establishment and implementation of a preventative maintenance programme.
• Coordinates repairs required for pool equipment which may affect programme schedules with programming personnel.
• Keeps written records of staff schedules, equipment operations, maintenance schedules and daily and weekly swimming pool reports.
• Orders chemicals and test reagents for all swimming pools.
• Works with the Trades Section to improve efficiency in swimming pool filtration systems; assesses changes, repairs or new equipment to be installed during shutdown of pools.
• Monitors water quality and chemical treatment at the Golf course Club houses and other buildings where the water supply requires treatment.
• Keeps up to date with new techniques and swimming pool technology.
• Follows all rules and regulations as set out in the Provincial Occupational Health and Safety Act and the City of Regina Occupational Health and Safety Manual.
• Performs the duties of the Facilities Operator I, as required.

Key Qualifications

• Grade twelve (12), Swimming Pool Operation and Management Course.
• Two (2) years related experience, including one (l) year as a Facility Operator I.
• Knowledge of the principles, methods and safe working practices common to the operation of a large facility.
• Knowledge of manual and automated facilities operating systems and equipment.
• Knowledge of chemicals used in the equipment (i.e., Ammonia, Chlorine, Diatomaceous Earth, Soda Ash, et cetera).
• Knowledge of chemical handling procedures and uses.
• Knowledge of the general rules and regulations of the Provincial Occupational Health and Safety Act.
• Ability to follow work schedules.
• Ability to train and appraise the work of pool operators.
• Ability to maintain and promote an active working relationship with volunteer groups, and various other department people.
• Skill in the performance of tasks and in the operation of machinery and equipment.

Working/Other Conditions

• The position is normally assigned to major facilities containing aquatics.
• Shift work is required.
• Must possess a valid Level II Pool Operator\'s Certificate, a First Aid Certificate.
• Must possess a valid driver\'s licence

• Proof of education is required.
• Additional assessments may be conducted to evaluate competencies, skills, and knowledge.
