Job summary

Norland is seeking a Civil Construction Surveyor for our Vancouver Island South operations, based on Vancouver Island, BC. You will provide precise survey layout, grade control, and as-built documentation to support civil infrastructure projects.

Ideal candidates have a Diploma in Geomatics or related field, 3+ years of civil surveying experience, and proficiency with Trimble/BCT software. Travel across Vancouver Island may be required; full-time on-site role with competitive compensation.

Qualifications

  • Diploma or certificate in Geomatics, Survey Technology, Civil Engineering Technology, or related discipline preferred.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in civil construction surveying.
  • Experience on municipal infrastructure, road building, underground utilities, bridges, or heavy civil projects.
  • Proficiency with GPS/GNSS systems and robotic total stations.
  • Experience using Trimble Business Center, Civil 3D, AutoCAD, or comparable survey software.
  • Strong understanding of construction drawings, grades, alignments, and specifications.
  • Excellent mathematical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.
  • Valid Class 5 BC Driver's License.
  • Occupational First Aid and CSTS certification considered assets.

Responsibilities

  • Perform survey layout for civil infrastructure projects including roads, underground utilities, retaining walls, bridges, marine works, and site development.
  • Establish and maintain horizontal and vertical survey control points and benchmarks.
  • Provide accurate line, grade, elevation, and offset information to construction crews.
  • Prepare and manage survey layout files using Civil 3D, Trimble Business Center, or similar software.
  • Operate GPS, GNSS, robotic total stations, digital levels, and construction laser equipment.
  • Verify construction work meets project drawings, specifications, and design requirements.
  • Complete topographic surveys, quantity calculations, earthwork volume reporting, and progress tracking.
  • Prepare and maintain as-built records and drawings throughout project execution.
  • Coordinate survey requirements with project management, engineering consultants, and subcontractors.
  • Maintain survey equipment and ensure instruments remain calibrated and in proper working order.
  • Support project planning by identifying potential conflicts, discrepancies, or constructability issues.
  • Adhere to company safety policies, WorkSafeBC regulations, and project-specific safety requirements.

Civil Construction Surveyor

Location: Vancouver Island, BC (Victoria, Nanaimo, Duncan, and surrounding areas)

Copcan Civil, a division of Norland Limited, is a leading civil construction contractor with over 50 years of experience delivering infrastructure projects throughout British Columbia. Our projects include municipal infrastructure, underground utilities, highways, bridges, marine works, site development, environmental projects, and industrial construction.

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Civil Construction Surveyor to join our Vancouver Island South operations. This position plays a critical role in ensuring accurate layout, grade control, quantity tracking, and as-built documentation for a variety of civil construction projects.

Position Summary

The Civil Construction Surveyor is responsible for providing precise survey layout and grade control for construction crews, maintaining survey control networks, preparing survey data, and supporting project teams with field measurements and reporting. The successful candidate will work closely with Project Managers, Superintendents, Forepersons, Grade persons, and equipment operators to ensure work is completed accurately and efficiently.

Key Responsibilities

The role is a permanent, full-time position with a typical starting salary range of $xx,xxx to $xxx,xxx per annum.
