Job summary

Midwest is seeking a Survey Assistant in Medicine Hat to support field crews across Western Canada. The role involves assisting with survey tasks, data collection, and equipment setup under the Crew Chief supervision.

The position offers hands-on mentorship, safety-focused training, and opportunities to advance in geomatics. Applicants should be prepared for outdoor work in varied conditions and travel as required.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent;Geomatics coursework asset.
  • Valid driver’s license and clean record.
  • Ability to comply with Drug & Alcohol testing requirements.
  • Experience outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Experience with OHVs and 1-ton class trucks.
  • Experience with MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel).
  • Familiarity with navigational tools (GPS, maps).
  • Experience with survey equipment (GNSS RTK, Total Stations, levels) is an asset.

Job description

We are currently looking for a Survey Assistant in our Medicine Hat location. Medicine Hat is a vibrant city located in southeast Alberta with a population of 63,271 (Statistics Canada, 2021) . With 330 days of sunshine, there are plenty of indoor and outdoor recreational opportunities.

Summary of Responsibilities:

  • Follow all Midwest health and safety policies, practices & procedures, with a commitment to contributing to the safe work culture.
  • Participate in monthly field safety meetings.
  • Able to communicate effectively with the Crew Chief, including asking questions and a willingness to learn about survey methodology and techniques.
  • Able to operate all communication and electronic equipment (cell phones, laptops, etc...).
  • Able to operate motor vehicles, including OHVs (off-highway vehicles) and medium-duty trucks (Ford F-350 or similar).
  • Able to operate survey equipment under the supervision of the Crew Chief, including setting up, operation and packing up all survey equipment.
  • Able to perform basic survey data collector functions under the supervision of the Crew Chief.
  • Able to complete basic survey tasks such as staking and flagging boundaries and searching/digging for survey evidence.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment, including maintenance of tools, supplies, and vehicles.
  • Comply with jurisdictional Commercial Carrier Safety requirements/regulations (training provided by Midwest).
  • Utilize company-required checklists and procedures.
  • Develop a basic understanding of project related documentation and project workflows.
  • Assume a safety lead position should the Crew Chief become injured.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Crew Chief and Field Operations Manager.

What you offer:

  • A valid driver’s license, free of major convictions as defined in jurisdictional traffic safety regulations (i.e., distracted driving, driving while impaired).
  • A High School Diploma, or equivalent (completed courses in Geomatics from a recognized post-secondary institution is considered an asset).
  • The ability to comply with Drug & Alcohol testing requirements as stipulated by client requirements and jurisdictional health and safety regulations.
  • Experience working outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Experience with operating Off Highway Vehicles (OHVs) & 1-ton class trucks (F-350 or similar medium duty truck).
  • Experience with basic Microsoft applications, including Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • Comfort with the operation and use of navigational and orienteering tools (e.g., handheld GPS units, Google maps, hard-copy paper maps, etc.).
  • Experience in a similar role including the use of survey equipment (e.g., GNSS RTK, Total Stations, Levels, UAVs, etc.) is an asset.

Work Environment, Physical Effort & Schedule

The Survey Assistant position works in various outdoor and all-terrain, all-weather environments typically present in Western Canada, and physical exertion may be required daily including, but not limited to:

  • Walking on a variety of uneven ground, up to several kilometers (i.e., fields, pasture, construction sites, rugged natural terrain, etc).
  • Lifting equipment and supplies between 20-35 kg (50-80 lbs.) and carrying equipment and supplies up to 20 kg (50 lbs).
  • Operating OHVs (Off-Highway Vehicles) in all weather conditions.
  • Utilizing hand tools, such as hammers, sledgehammers and jackhammers to install survey monumentation and markings.

Field based survey positions, including the Survey Assistant position, require availability to travel as required by work assignment. Midwest will be responsible for costs associated with lodging, and the Survey Assistant shall be reimbursed for subsistence costs. The length of work assignments varies based on client requirements, job complexity, and job location. The Survey Assistant position may be away from home for up to 24 calendar days at a time .
