Job summary

Midwest in Lethbridge is seeking a Survey Assistant to support surveying across sectors. You will assist the Crew Chief with fieldwork, setup, data collection and safety procedures.

This role requires a high school diploma, valid driver's license, and ability to work outdoors in all weather. We offer mentorship, benefits, paid safety training, accommodation when traveling, and a collaborative team environment.

Qualifications

  • A High School Diploma or equivalent; geomatics courses are an asset.
  • Experience working outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to operate OHVs and trucks (F-350 class).
  • Familiarity with basic Microsoft applications and navigation tools.

Responsibilities

  • Follow all Midwest health and safety policies and participate in safety meetings.
  • Assist Crew Chief with surveying across all divisions.
  • Operate survey equipment under supervision and set up field instruments.
  • Perform staking, flagging boundaries, and basic data collection tasks.
  • Maintain organized work environment and comply with regulations.
  • Travel for field assignments and assist with documentation workflows.
  • Step into safety lead role if Crew Chief is injured.

Summary of Responsibilities

The Survey Assistantis responsible forassistinga Crew Chief in the practice of surveying across all sectors/divisions within Midwest. Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Follow all Midwest health and safety policies, practices & procedures, with a commitment to contributing to the safe work culture.
  • Participate in monthly field safety meetings.
  • Able to communicate effectively with the Crew Chief, including asking questions and a willingness to learn about surveymethodologyand techniques.
  • Able tooperateall communication and electronic equipment (cell phones, laptops, etc.).
  • Able tooperatemotor vehicles, including OHVs (off-highway vehicles) and medium-duty trucks (Ford F-350 or similar).
  • Able tooperatesurvey equipment under the supervision of the Crew Chief, including setting up, operation and packing up all survey equipment.
  • Able to perform basic survey data collector functions under the supervision of the Crew Chief.
  • Able to complete basic survey tasks such as staking and flagging boundaries and searching/digging for survey evidence.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment, including maintenance of tools, supplies, and vehicles.
  • Comply withjurisdictional Commercial Carrier Safety requirements/regulations (training provided by Midwest).
  • Utilize company-required checklists and procedures.
  • Develop a basic understanding of project related documentation and project workflows.
  • Assume a safety lead position should the Crew Chief become injured.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Crew Chief and Field Operations Manager.

  • A valid driver’s license, free of major convictions as defined in jurisdictional traffic safety regulations (i.e., distracted driving, driving while impaired).
  • A High School Diploma, or equivalent (completed courses in Geomatics from a recognized post-secondary institutionisconsidered an asset).
  • The ability tocomply withDrug & Alcohol testing requirements as stipulated by client requirements and jurisdictional health and safety regulations.
  • Experience working outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Experience with operating Off Highway Vehicles (OHVs) & 1-ton class trucks (F-350 or similar medium duty truck).
  • Experience with basic Microsoft applications, including Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • Comfort with the operation and use of navigational and orienteering tools (e.g., handheld GPS units, Google® maps, hard-copy paper maps, etc.).
  • Experience in a similar role including the use of survey equipment (e.g., GNSS RTK, Total Stations, Levels, UAVs, etc.) is an asset.

Work Environment, Physical Effort & Schedule

The Survey Assistant position works in various outdoor and all-terrain, all-weather environments typically present in Western Canada, and physical exertion may be required daily including, but not limited to:

  • Walking on a variety of uneven ground, up to several kilometers (i.e., fields, pasture, construction sites, rugged natural terrain,etc).
  • Lifting equipment and supplies between 20-35 kg (50-80 lbs.) and carrying equipment and supplies up to 20 kg (50lbs).
  • Operating OHVs (Off-Highway Vehicles) in all weather conditions.
  • Utilizing hand tools, such as hammers,sledgehammersand jackhammers to install survey monumentation and markings.

Field based survey positions, including the Survey Assistant position, require availability to travel as required by work assignment. Midwest will be responsible for costs associated with lodging, and the Survey Assistant shall be reimbursed for subsistence costs. The length of work assignments varies based on client requirements, job complexity, and job location.
