Job summary

Ontario Transit Group is seeking a Mechanical Foreman to lead field mechanical works for surface operations and tunneling activities on the Ontario Line South Civil package. You will coordinate with engineers, site managers, and trades to ensure safe, efficient installation and maintenance of equipment.

Role requires strong leadership, excellent communication, and a proven ability to interpret mechanical drawings while maintaining schedule integrity and safety compliance on a major transit

Qualifications

  • 7–10 years of mechanical experience in construction, tunneling preferred.
  • Proven supervisory track record leading a team of workers.
  • Ability to read mechanical drawings, specs and blueprints.
  • Strong safety knowledge and compliance with regulations.
  • Excellent communication with engineers and site managers.
  • Willingness to register as a member of the local union.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the installation, maintenance, and operation of mechanical equipment related to construction and surface level activities.
  • Ensure all mechanical works are carried out safely, efficiently, and to project specifications.
  • Collaborate with engineers, site managers, and other trades to coordinate works within the tunneling schedule.
  • Ensure mechanical activities do not impede other aspects of the tunneling process.
  • Implement quality control to meet project standards and specifications.
  • Regularly inspect installations and repairs to maintain high-quality workmanship.
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations and best practices; lead safety briefings.
  • Manage allocation of mechanical resources including personnel, tools, and materials.
  • Provide updates to project management on status of activities.
  • Address mechanical issues with the engineering team to minimize disruptions.

Job description

Ferrovial Construction Canada Inc. and VINCI Construction Grands Projets are undertaking the design, build, and finance the Ontario Line Southern Civil, Stations, and Tunnel (South Civil) package.

As Ontario Transit Group, we are now mobilizing our design and construction crews, with major works. The South Civil contract is anticipated to be completed in 2030.

The project will strengthen Ontario’s economy by supporting an estimated 1,500 jobs at the peak of construction.

What is the project?

  • A six-kilometer tunnel and associated tunnelling works from Exhibition to Don Yard portal (west of the Don River).
  • Stations:
    • One above-ground station to be integrated with the existing GO Transit Exhibition Station.
    • Two underground stations to be integrated with the existing TTC Osgoode and Queen subway stations.
    • Four new underground stations (King/Bathurst, Queen/Spadina, Moss Park, Corktown).

Job Description

The Mechanical Foreman leads and supervises mechanical works for surface operations, ensuring safe, efficient installation and maintenance of equipment. This role is responsible for coordinating with project teams to align schedules, enforce quality standards, and manage resources. Additionally, they ensure safety compliance, conduct inspections, and resolve mechanical issues to keep tunneling activities on track.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the installation, maintenance, and operation of mechanical equipment related to construction and surface level activities.
  • Ensure that all mechanical works are carried out safely, efficiently, and according to project specifications.
  • Collaborate with engineers, site managers, and other trades to coordinate mechanical works within the overall tunneling schedule.
  • Ensure that mechanical activities do not impede other aspects of the tunneling process.
  • Implement quality control procedures to ensure that all mechanical work meets project standards and specifications.
  • Regularly inspect mechanical installations and repairs to maintain high-quality workmanship.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety regulations and best practices.
  • Conduct regular safety briefings and ensure that all mechanical workers are properly trained and equipped to perform their duties safely.
  • Manage the allocation of mechanical resources, including personnel, tools, and materials.
  • Ensure that the required resources are available on-site when needed and that any issues are promptly addressed.
  • Maintain detailed records of mechanical works, including daily logs, equipment usage, and maintenance records.
  • Provide regular updates to the project management team on the status of mechanical activities.
  • Address any mechanical issues or challenges that arise during surface and tunneling operations. Work with the engineering team to develop solutions that minimize disruptions and maintain progress.
  • Oversee the maintenance, repair, and proper operation of all mechanical equipment used.
  • Coordinate with the equipment manager to ensure that machinery is in optimal working condition.
Qualifications
  • Minimum of 7‑10 years of experience in mechanical work within the construction industry, with specific experience in tunneling or underground construction preferred.
  • Proven track record in a supervisory role, with strong leadership skills and the ability to manage and motivate a team of mechanical workers.
  • Proficient in reading and interpreting mechanical drawings, specifications, and blueprints.
  • Deep understanding of safety regulations and best practices, particularly in the context of tunneling and underground construction.
  • Certification in safety management or related fields is an asset.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to effectively liaise with engineers, site managers, and other stakeholders.
  • Strong problem‑solving skills, with the ability to think critically and develop solutions to complex mechanical challenges.
  • Must be willing to register as a member of the local union.

This is a unionized role; therefore, the salary will be the according to the Schedule and Group per the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
