Job summary

Ontario Transit Group (OTG) in Downtown Toronto is recruiting an Assistant Superintendent to support the General Superintendent on the Ontario Line South Civil package. You will coordinate daily on-site construction activities, ensure safety, and drive progress in line with plans and schedules.

The role requires post-secondary construction management education and at least five years of civil construction experience, including leadership of trades and subcontractors.

Qualifications

  • Post secondary education in Construction Management or equivalent.
  • Minimum 5+ years civil construction experience in a Superintendent role.
  • Proficient knowledge of scheduling, safety, cost and quality control.
  • Experience in concrete works and related civil tasks is an asset.
  • Ability to lead a large team and manage multiple trades.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the General Superintendent in managing on-site work to ensure compliance with drawings, specifications, and quality standards.
  • Monitor work performance to ensure project rules and procedures are followed.
  • Advise the Superintendent of potential problems and schedule difficulties, and help resolve them.
  • Support planning and implementation of schedules, manpower, material quantities, inspections, and equipment needs.
  • Ensure proper equipment and trades are available as required.
  • Maintain and analyze cost reports and recommend changes to keep the project within budget.
  • Supervise employees and subcontractors to achieve project deliverables.
  • Apply the Project Specific Safety Program and ensure HS&E standards compliance.
  • Oversee accurate project reporting, including site progress and inspections.
  • Meet with consultants, trades, and stakeholders professionally, representing OTG's interests.

Job description

Ferrovial Construction Canada Inc. and VINCI Construction Grands Projets are undertaking the design, build, and finance of the Ontario Line Southern Civil, Stations, and Tunnel (South Civil) package.

As Ontario Transit Group, we are now mobilizing our design and construction crews, with major works. The South Civil contract is anticipated to be completed in 2030.

The project will strengthen Ontario’s economy by supporting an estimated 1,500 jobs at the peak of construction.

What is the project?

  • A six-kilometer tunnel and associated tunnelling works from Exhibition to Don Yard portal (west of the Don River).
  • Stations:
    • One above-ground station to be integrated with the existing GO Transit Exhibition Station.
    • Two underground stations to be integrated with the existing TTC Osgoode and Queen subway stations.
    • Four new underground stations (King/Bathurst, Queen/Spadina, Moss Park, Corktown).

Job Description

The Assistant Superintendent supports the General Superintendent or Superintendent in coordinating daily on‑site construction activities, ensuring the project runs safely, efficiently, and in accordance with plans and specifications. This role supports managing scheduling, manpower, materials, and subcontractors while maintaining site documentation and assisting in resolving on‑site issues to keep the project on track.

The salary range for this position is $140,000 CAD - $180,000 CAD, plus additional benefits.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist the General Superintendent or Superintendent in managing on‑site work to ensure compliance with drawings, specifications, and quality standards.
  • Monitor work performance to ensure project rules and procedures are followed.
  • Advise the General Superintendent or Superintendent of potential problems, work interferences, and schedule difficulties, and help resolve them.
  • Support planning and implementation of schedules, manpower levels, material quantities, inspections, and equipment needs.
  • Ensure proper equipment and trades are available as required.
  • Maintain and analyze up‑to‑date cost reports and recommend changes to keep the project within budget.
  • Supervise employees and subcontractors to achieve project deliverables.
  • Apply and enforce the Project Specific Safety Program and ensure compliance with HS&E standards, OH&S Acts, regulations, and codes.
  • Oversee accurate project reporting, including site progress, events, and inspections.
  • Meet with consultants, trades, and other stakeholders professionally, communicating concerns and representing the company’s best interests.
Qualifications
  • Post secondary education in Construction Management/or an equivalent combination of technical training and experience.
  • Minimum 5+ of civil construction experience as a Superintendent, Assistant Superintendent, general foreman or similar role.
  • Proficient knowledge of various construction disciplines, safety regulations, scheduling, cost control, quality control and engineering drawings.
  • Experience in civil works, (Concrete pours, falsework, formwork, waterproofing, rebar, etc.) concrete works and SOE is an asset.
  • Ability to quickly identify problem situations, evaluate alternative causes, produce workable solutions and lead a large team to successful completion.
  • Time management skills and ability to prioritize.
  • Leadership skills and experience supervising trades, contractors and other personnel.
  • Working knowledge of scheduling, project management, and Microsoft Office programs such as Word, Excel and Outlook.
