Job summary

ewi Recruitment is seeking a Support Tunnel (Design) Engineer to contribute to the design and delivery of safe, practical, and cost-effective tunnel linings, ground support, temporary works, excavation sequences, and underground structures across a range of ground conditions.

You will collaborate with engineers, geologists, construction teams and other technical disciplines to ensure designs are robust, buildable and aligned with project requirements.

Qualifications

• Degree in civil, structural, geotechnical or mining engineering.

• Ability to interpret geological data and use design software.

Job description

We are seeking a Support Tunnel (Design) Engineer to contribute to the design and delivery of safe, practical, and cost-effective support systems for underground construction and tunnelling projects. The role will involve developing design solutions for tunnel linings, ground support, temporary works, excavation sequences, and associated underground structures across a range of ground conditions and project stages. You will work closely with engineers, geologists, construction teams, and other technical disciplines to ensure that designs are robust, buildable, and aligned with project requirements.

Key responsibilities will include preparing design calculations, technical reports, drawings, specifications, and schedules; assessing ground behaviour and support requirements; reviewing contractor proposals and temporary works submissions; and providing engineering input during construction. You will assist with design verification, risk assessments, constructability reviews, and technical discussions, while ensuring that all work complies with relevant codes, standards, health and safety requirements, and quality procedures. The role may also involve site visits, inspections, responding to technical queries, supporting project planning, and contributing to design reviews and progress meetings.

Applicants should have a degree in civil, structural, geotechnical, or mining engineering, together with relevant experience in tunnel engineering, underground construction, or ground support design. Experience with sprayed concrete linings, rock bolts, steel sets, segmental linings, instrumentation, or excavation and support methods would be highly beneficial. You should be comfortable interpreting geological and geotechnical information, undertaking engineering assessments, and using design and technical software. Strong communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills are essential, as is the ability to manage priorities and work effectively within multidisciplinary teams. Professional registration or progress towards professional registration is desirable.
