Job description

We are seeking an experienced Tunnel Engineer to support the planning, design, construction and delivery of major underground infrastructure projects. The successful candidate will contribute technical expertise across the full project lifecycle, helping to ensure that tunnel works are safe, buildable, compliant with relevant standards and delivered to programme and budget. This role may involve working across site, design offices and project coordination environments, with opportunities to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, contractors, consultants and stakeholders.

Key responsibilities will include preparing and reviewing tunnel designs, specifications, calculations, drawings, method statements and technical reports. You will assess construction methodologies, ground conditions, temporary works, ventilation, excavation support, waterproofing, lining systems and interfaces with associated civil, structural and mechanical works. You will provide engineering advice during construction, review technical submissions, monitor progress and quality, support inspections, and help resolve design or site issues. The role will also involve contributing to risk assessments, design reviews, programme planning, cost control, change management and the preparation of accurate project records. Where required, you may supervise junior engineers and coordinate specialist subcontractors and external technical advisers.

Applicants should hold a degree or equivalent qualification in civil engineering, tunnelling, geotechnical engineering or a related discipline, along with relevant professional experience in tunnel or underground construction projects. Knowledge of tunnelling methods such as sprayed concrete lining, tunnel boring machines, cut-and-cover, drill and blast or sequential excavation would be advantageous. You should be confident interpreting technical information, using engineering and project management software, and communicating clearly with both technical and non-technical colleagues. Strong problem-solving, organisation and attention to detail are essential, as is a commitment to health, safety, environmental and quality standards. Professional registration or progress toward registration is desirable.
