Job summary

WSP is seeking a Senior Tunnelling Engineer in Mississauga, part of the Greater Toronto Area, to lead design and delivery of tunnelling and underground projects. You will oversee rock mechanics, slope stability, and advanced numerical analyses, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to ensure safety and performance.

The role requires 10–15 years in rock mechanics and tunnelling, a PE license, and strong client-facing skills.

Qualifications

  • 10–15 years of experience in rock mechanics, tunnelling, and underground design in consulting.
  • Degree in Geological, Mining, or Civil Engineering; PEO licensure.
  • Experience delivering large tunnelling and underground infrastructure projects.
  • Expertise in excavation support design in rock environments (tunnels, shafts, slopes).
  • Advanced proficiency with numerical modelling tools (RS2/RS3, PLAXIS, GeoStudio).
  • Strong PM skills and ability to manage competing priorities.
  • Excellent writing, communication, and stakeholder engagement.
  • Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel; English fluency; French is a plus.

Responsibilities

Job description

Senior Tunneling Engineer

Location: Mississauga, Greater Toronto Area.

Job Description:

  • Lead the design and delivery of tunnelling, slope stability, and underground excavation projects in rock from concept through construction.
  • Deliver innovative geotechnical solutions that enhance safety, efficiency, and long‑term performance.
  • Oversee geological investigations, alignment studies, and advanced geo‑structural and numerical analyses.
  • Guide multidisciplinary collaboration across geotechnical, structural, and environmental teams.
  • Mentor and develop junior engineers, strengthening technical capability and knowledge sharing.
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships while supporting proposals and business development activities.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards, and safety requirements across all project phases.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement through innovation, best practices, and lessons learned.
Qualifications
  • 10–15 years of experience in rock mechanics, tunnelling, and underground design within a consulting environment.
  • Degree in Geological, Mining, or Civil Engineering (Master’s degree considered an asset). Licensed Professional Engineer with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO).
  • Proven experience delivering large‑scale tunnelling and underground infrastructure projects.
  • Strong expertise in excavation support design in rock environments (tunnels, shafts, slopes, stabilization systems).
  • Advanced proficiency with numerical modelling tools (e.g., RS2/RS3, PLAXIS, GeoStudio or similar).
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to manage competing priorities and deliver high‑quality outcomes.
  • Excellent technical writing, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to project sites as required.
  • Fluency in English; French is an asset.
Compensation

AB, BC, NT, NU, SK & YT: $135,200 - $179,100
MB & ON: $123,300 - $169,800
NB, NL, NS, PE & QC: $122,100 - $162,200

Final salary will vary based on factors such as education, experience, location, and performance.
