Job description

About you:

You are a technically minded problem-solver who enjoys hands-on engineering work and making complex systems run smoothly. You thrive on supporting users of cutting-edge prototypes, digging into issues, and ensuring instruments operate at peak performance. You’re comfortable troubleshooting across hardware and software, documenting findings clearly, and collaborating with development teams to turn feedback into improvements. You’re organized, curious, and energized by being the person who keeps R&D moving in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment.

What you'll do:
  • Log, track, and triage bugs, defects, and issues reported by users of prototype instruments.
  • Conduct root cause analysis and troubleshoot hardware, firmware, and software issues on prototype systems.
  • Perform routine maintenance, repairs, and calibrations to keep prototypes operational and reliable.
  • Run routine quality control checks to ensure instruments meet performance and reliability standards.
  • Provide training and responsive support to internal users of our prototype devices, answering technical questions and guiding best practices.
  • Document findings from troubleshooting and repair activities and communicate clear summaries and recommendations to the development team.
  • Work closely with engineering teams to implement solutions and improvements based on user feedback and failure trends.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of prototypes through hands-on testing, feedback loops, and iterative fixes.
  • Help design and implement infrastructure solutions that maintain a safe, organized, and streamlined workspace.
What you'll need:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Applied Physics, Mechanical, Electrical, Mechatronics Engineering, or a related field.
  • Hands-on experience with technical work, including troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of electromechanical systems.
  • Strong organizational skills for tracking issues, managing tickets, and supporting quality control activities.
  • Ability to communicate technical findings clearly and concisely, both in writing and verbally.
  • Familiarity with basic hardware and software testing tools, repair tools, and diagnostic equipment.
  • Basic knowledge of quality control and reliability testing concepts.
  • Comfort with CAD software (SolidWorks preferred) to review designs and understand mechanical interfaces.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment, supporting both engineers and end users.

Bonus points for:

  • Experience with structured root cause analysis and troubleshooting of electromechanical or mechatronic systems.
  • Familiarity with bug tracking systems (e.g., Jira) and quality management software.
  • Basic understanding of regulatory environments such as FDA, ISO standards, or GMP guidelines.
  • Basic programming skills for test automation or troubleshooting (e.g., Python, C/C++).
  • Prior experience in a startup, R&D lab, or prototype-heavy environment.
  • An appreciation for puns and contributing to a supportive, curious team culture.
Why Join us?

At VitalBio you will:

  • Be the frontline support for the instruments that power our diagnostic platform - keeping R&D teams unblocked and prototypes performing at their best.
  • You’ll gain deep exposure to our technology across mechanics, electronics, and software, while working closely with the engineers who design them.
  • As we iterate quickly from concept to clinical-ready systems, you’ll have the opportunity to grow your technical skills, shape support processes, and see your work directly enable breakthroughs in patient care.

The compensation range for this role is $60,000 - $70,000 CAD. Compensation will be determined based on the individual’s demonstrated experience, education, training, relevant certifications or licensure, and other applicable business and organizational factors.
