Job summary

The Co-operators Group’s CGIC unit seeks a Supervisor, Underwriting – Personal Lines to lead a team of underwriters and coordinators within a hybrid work model (2 days in office). The role emphasises strategic planning, coaching, and ongoing development of staff while ensuring client-focused underwriting excellence.

Requirements include five years of related insurance experience, a post-secondary degree in Business/Commerce, and bilingual English/French communication.

  • Post-secondary degree in Business, Commerce or related discipline.
  • CIP designation is an asset; strong knowledge of insurance products and practices.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership to Underwriters, Operations Leads, Project Consultants and Coordinators.
  • Develop and implement strategic plans to enhance department effectiveness.
  • Manage unit plans, goals, priorities and schedules aligned with corporate objectives.
  • Oversee budget planning and monitor expenditures to meet financial targets.
  • Coach and develop staff, recruit and select talent, and drive performance.

Our highly skilled, transforming P&C Underwriting team strives forward to deliver effective underwriting insurance services and evolving offerings to address emerging insurance trends and meet the evolving needs of our clients.

As the Supervisor, Underwriting you will provide functional expertise and guidance to Underwriters, Operations Leads, Underwriting Project Consultants, and Underwriting Coordinators. You will manage and support your teams while developing and implementing strategic plans to contribute to the overall effectiveness of the department.

  • Providing leadership to manage change effectively and ensure a positive, supportive and professional work environment.
  • Developing, implementing and monitoring unit plans, goals, priorities and schedules that are aligned with organizational and departmental strategic goals.
  • Contributing to the development and management of expenditures within a department budget by developing plans to achieve financial goals.
  • Ensuring that underwriting decision-making processes and consultations across all product lines is consistent and considerate of client profitability and growth expectations.
  • Coaching and developing your team, recruiting and selecting talent, recognizing achievements, and managing performance, to develop an agile team and achieve department objectives.

To join our team:
  • You have five years successful related insurance experience or related work experience.
  • You have a post-secondary degree in Business, Commerce or a related discipline.
  • Have the Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) designation is an asset.
  • Having strong knowledge of insurance products, processes and practices is an asset.
  • You have strong knowledge and experience in leading, mentoring, coaching, and contributing to the development of staff.
  • Proficiency in both English and French is essential to the main duties in this role, including servicing and communicating primarily with majority anglophone and francophone clients, groups, and teams. The essential non-French duties are not assignable to adjacent or other team members.

Expected salary range $72,847 - $121,411 (min-max, full range).

The salary amount for the successful candidate is determined by Co-operators in its discretion and will vary depending on several criteria including but not limited to: local market conditions, geography and relevant job-related factors such as knowledge, skills, qualification, experience and education.

Employees may also have the opportunity to participate in incentive programs and earn additional compensation tied to individual and/or business performance, or other business metrics.
