Position Description

Department: Housing & Gender-Based Violence Support Services

Reports to: Department Manager

Location: Hamilton, ON

Hours of Work: 37.5 hours per week

Start Date: TBD

Posting Date: February 11th, 2025

Leads and supervises staff and provides high quality and responsive housing and services for women in life transition. Supervises staff providing services related to the YWCA Hamilton Transitional Living, Phoenix Place and other housing projects as assigned to meet the needs of women in crisis including crisis management, case management, and advocacy.

  • Responsible for the overall administration and operation of the Transitional Living and Phoenix Place residence;
  • Directly supervises 20-30 employees; including scheduling, training, monitoring and evaluating performance;
  • In collaboration with the frontline team, provides a range of social work/housing supports to women in the residence including goal setting, case management, life skills, advocacy and crisis intervention;
  • Demonstrates tact, discretion and persuasion required in influencing, teaching, motivating clients and employees;
  • Resolves conflicts or highly sensitive situations as a regular and recurring requirement;
  • Oversees and evaluates initial assessment of program applicants; determines suitability and case management plan within defined framework;
  • Analyses broad problems generally of an operating or specialized nature develops solutions;
  • Completes file audits and monthly and ad hoc reports as required;
  • Maintains high level of confidentiality when working with sensitive and personal client, employee and contract information;
  • Supports the team in managing the impact of vicarious trauma when working with clients at risk;
  • Assists Manager with development of, and implements and tracks annual budget;
  • Schedules staff and completes all payroll administration duties;
  • Assists manager by sitting on or leading internal and external committees;
  • Provides training to staff and students (e.g. anti-racism);
  • Stays current on legislation affecting housing programs, regulations and directives and understands emerging trends, leading practices, industry professional standards;
  • Provides recommendations to strengthen existing policies and/or processes;
  • Maintains appropriate record-keeping and expense reporting in accordance with YWCA Hamilton’s policies and procedures, and confidentiality/privacy policies;
  • Identifies and evaluates risks associated with members/clients and takes appropriate action to control risks;
  • Demonstrates and models strong leadership behaviours as a member of the YWCA leadership team;
  • Nurtures and forms meaningful internal and external working relationships and partnerships;
  • Fosters a safe and healthy work environment; ensures employees comply with health, safety standards that meet or exceed legislated requirements;
  • Supports YWCA Hamilton mission, vision and values;
  • Perform other duties as required.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Works a standard 37.50-hour work week; regularly on-call rotation for emergencies, crisis situations and resourcing issues;
  • Regular visits and inspections of residences;
  • Regularly works in emotionally charged situations requiring resolution.

Qualifications

  • Completion of 3 years’ college in social or human services, or equivalent;
  • Minimum 3 to 5 years’ experience working with women with multiple barriers and concurrent disorders (mental health addiction, violence);
  • Demonstrated leadership skills;
  • Knowledge of issue trauma and practice of harm reduction principles;
  • Knowledge and skills in crisis intervention and supportive counseling;
  • Must have current Standard First Aid and CPR C certificate or willingness to obtain at own cost;
  • Must provide a current Vulnerable sector police check or willingness to obtain at own cost;
  • Ability to bring an intersectional feminist, anti-racist/anti-oppressive perspective to day-to-day work and

planning;

  • Ability to work a schedule that includes regular on-call rotation for emergencies, crisis situations and resourcing issues;
  • Excellent communication skills;
  • Bilingual English/French or other languages an asset.
