Job summary

The Hospital for Sick Children is seeking a Supervisor for the Department of Paediatric Laboratory Medicine in Toronto. You’ll oversee daily lab operations, supervise staff, and drive policy development within a renowned paediatric facility.

The role requires extensive lab experience, supervisory background, and expertise in molecular genetics, with a strong emphasis on quality, budgeting, and education initiatives. This is a 18-month temporary contract in a world-class environment.

Qualifications

• Graduate of a Clinical Genetics MLT program.
• BMLSC or equivalent preferred.
• ART designation preferred.
• CMLTO registration current and maintained.
• Seven years of technical laboratory experience.
• Four years of supervisory experience preferred.
• Strong knowledge of molecular genetics techniques.
• Excellent verbal and written communication.
• Ability to lead teams and work independently.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
• Commitment to continuing education and equity, diversity, inclusion.

• Directly supervise assigned laboratory personnel.
• Develop, implement and maintain policies and procedures of the Clinical Laboratory.
• Ensure adherence to Hospital policies and procedures within the laboratory.
• Maintain responsibility for laboratory equipment and products.
• Coordinate and participate in the identification, development and delivery of professional development programs.
• Facilitate access to educational programs by assigned personnel, maintaining professional development of self.
• Ensure staff compliance with quality assurance requirements and standards.
• Participating in the preparation and monitoring of the operational budgets.
• Prepare and review monthly LMIS model with financial, manpower and test volume data.
• Assist with the preparation of capital budgets.
• Adhere to Hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
• Adhere to Hospital and departmental mission and value statements while maintaining patient confidentiality

As an integral member of the Laboratory management team, the Supervisor, DPLM is primarily responsible for maintaining the daily operation of the laboratory, including planning and organization of departmental initiatives; technical, operational and project supervision; human resources supervision; quality management, and teaching.

The Department of Paediatric Laboratory Medicine (DPLM) at SickKids is a leading, world-class facility working towards reducing the impact of childhood illness by providing diagnostic information that allows for early selection of best treatment options. DPLM is a valuable and integral part of the SickKids team, generating original research and providing timely, specialized diagnostic services for health care providers in Canada and around the world. The department comprises of five divisions: Clinical Biochemistry, Genome Diagnostics, Haematopathology, Microbiology, and Pathology. All DPLM laboratories are accredited by Accreditation Canada Diagnostics.

Here’s What You'll Need

• Graduate of a Clinical Genetics Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) program.
• Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Science (BMLSC) or equivalent preferred.
• Advanced Registered Technologist (ART) designation in area of responsibility preferred.
• Current registration with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO) as required by assigned area. Registration with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO) must be maintained each year and the Senior Manager must be provided with a copy of the registration by the date provided by Hospital policy.
• Seven (7) years technical laboratory experience.
• Four (4) years of supervisory experience in a laboratory setting preferred.
• Demonstrated expertise and experience in lab area; a strong understanding of molecular genetic techniques and analysis methods is an asset.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to work effectively as a team member, team leader and independently.
• Excellent problem recognition and problem-solving skills.
• Effective time management and organizational skills; ability to organize work and set priorities for self and others.
• Basic training in project management preferred.
• Experience with hospital departmental financial management preferred.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite: Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
• Ability to make sound and objective judgments.
• Demonstrated commitment to continuing education.
• Demonstrated commitment and actions in advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion objectives.
