The Ministry of Public Safety and Emergency Services has significant oversight and involvement in the public security and emergency services through its various divisions and operations. The department is responsible for the administration of law enforcement, correctional services, emergency response and recovery, policing and police oversight and public safety. The ministry works to ensure the development, availability and access to Restorative Justice, Victim Services, and specialized courts and administers federal firearms legislation and advocates for Alberta’s lawful firearms owners and promotes safety.

The Alberta Sheriffs Police Service (ASPS) was created in July 2025, and once operational, will strengthen Alberta’s existing policing model and complement the province’s current police services. The ASPS will help fill law enforcement service gaps and ensure its law enforcement resources are deployed efficiently to meet Alberta’s evolving public safety needs.

Please note : It is anticipated that this position will transition to the new Alabama Sheriffs Police Service at a future date.

Role

The Superintendent, Intelligence will provide strategic leadership and oversight for intelligence operations and intelligence-led policing within the Alberta Sheriffs Police Service (ASPS). In this role, you will be accountable for operational excellence, risk management, and compliance with legislative, regulatory, privacy, and human rights requirements in a complex and high-liability policing environment.

You will play a key role in establishing and shaping the Alberta Sheriffs Police Service (ASPS), supporting the transition of the Alberta Sheriffs into a modern police service through the development of intelligence frameworks, operational processes, and strategic partnerships. As Superintendent, Intelligence, you will provide executive leadership for intelligence operations, overseeing intelligence programs, threat and risk assessments, criminal intelligence initiatives, and information-sharing partnerships that support public safety and organizational decision-making. You will lead the development and execution of strategies that identify emerging threats, inform operational priorities, and enhance community safety. Working closely with executive leadership and external partners, you will strengthen organizational capability, advance intelligence-led policing, and build public confidence through ethical, innovative, and accountable leadership.

Qualifications

As the ideal candidate, you are an accomplished policing leader with a demonstrated ability to drive operational excellence, lead organizational transformation, and build public trust in complex and highly visible environments. You bring at least 10 years of progressive policing experience, including senior leadership roles with broad operational, strategic, and organizational accountability. You have successfully led complex policing operations, managed significant human and financial resources, and delivered results in dynamic, high-pressure environments.

You possess deep knowledge of contemporary policing practices, governance frameworks, legislation, regulatory requirements, and professional standards. Your expertise includes intelligence-led policing, emergency management, risk assessment, and the use of emerging technologies, data analytics, and business intelligence tools to enhance operational effectiveness and informed decision-making. You are a strategic and influential leader with a proven ability to lead organizational transformation, manage competing priorities, and deliver results in complex, highly visible environments. You exercise sound judgment, political acumen, and strategic thinking, building trusted relationships with government, law enforcement, Indigenous, and community partners to advance organizational and public safety objectives. You have a demonstrated track record of developing high-performing teams, fostering an inclusive and accountable culture, and championing workforce wellness and employee engagement. An exceptional communicator and relationship builder, you lead with integrity, professionalism, and an unwavering commitment to ethical leadership and public service.

A University degree in Public Administration, Business Administration, Criminal Justice, or a related discipline. A one-for-one equivalency of related experience or education will be considered.

The salary range for the Superintendent position is $206,995 to $217,777 annually. Salary will be commensurate with the successful candidate's qualifications and experience.

Notes

The successful candidate must be eligible for appointment as a Police Officer in Alberta in accordance with the Police Act and will be required to provide proof of qualifications. Employment is conditional upon obtaining and maintaining the appropriate security clearance, holding a valid Class 5 Driver's Licence (or equivalent), and successfully completing professional standards, background, and reference checks.
