Weekly Work Schedule: Varies – this is an on-call position for coverage

Pay Grade: The annual salary range is $70,437- $112,872 (at 100% appointment) based on qualifications, experience, and placement criteria of Article 14 of the NICFA Collective agreement.

Position Summary: North Island College is seeking a qualified substitute instructor for the Automotive Service Technician program at our Campbell River and/or Port Alberni Campuses. Responsibilities include instructing Foundation and Apprenticeship programming as per institutional and provincial outcomes and standards. Instruction encompasses comprehensive theory and technical training specific to AST. Other responsibilities include curriculum development, lesson planning, tool and equipment maintenance, participating in recruitment initiatives, and liaising with regional employers.

The teaching faculty of North Island College are responsible for implementing the College’s vision, goals, and objectives as they relate to teaching and learning. Faculty use organizational skills, inter-personal skills, and knowledge of subject matter, pedagogy, and curricular design. They also serve as role models for students and colleagues.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  1. Instructional:
    • Plan and prepare learning materials for instructional environments.
    • Use a variety of approaches and materials to address different learning needs.
    • Teach in assigned subject areas and include all required subject matter or skill activity.
    • Direct student learning in a positive, supportive, and caring environment.
    • Be available to students regularly during scheduled office hours and classroom hours.
    • Clearly communicate in writing learning outcomes for programs and courses.
    • Design and conduct evaluations or appraisals of students.
    • Submit grades in a timely manner.
    • Maintain records of student enrollment and achievement.
  2. Typical Professional Duties:
    • Work within College educational policies.
    • Contribute to the development of Education and Strategic plans.
    • Advise the Dean/Designate of items that need to be ordered.
    • Advise on enrollment management strategies.
    • Report health and safety concerns to the appropriate parties.
    • Maintain continuous professional development of competencies.
    • Participate in College committees and activities.
    • Undertake other related responsibilities as assigned.

Required Education & Experience:

  • Journeyperson Interprovincial Qualification (Red Seal) in Automotive Service Technician.
  • Certificate of Apprenticeship.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience as a journeyperson in the Automotive Service field.
  • Experience instructing adults in a post-secondary environment.
  • Completion of the Provincial Instructors Diploma program.

Required Knowledge Skills & Abilities:

  • Familiarity with the Automotive Service Technician program outlines.
  • Experience setting up training programs.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated excellent instructional abilities.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Proficiency with MS Office software applications.
  • A demonstrated commitment to continuous improvement.
