Job summary

Jacobs in Ontario, Canada is seeking a Substation Studies Engineer to perform power system analyses for planning, design, operation and expansion of transmission and distribution substations. Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in electrical engineering.
  • Minimum 4 years of direct experience with power system studies.
  • Experience with power system studies using ETAP, SKM and PSCAD or other equivalents.
  • Knowledge of IEC, IEEE and CIGRE standards.
  • Exceptional problem-solving and analytical capabilities with a focus on results.
  • Team player with strong interpersonal, communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability and willingness to travel within North America.

Responsibilities

  • Perform power system studies including load flow, short-circuit, insulation coordination, TOV, arc flash, grounding, and protection coordination studies.
  • Develop and review power system models and conduct analyses to support planning, design, operation, and expansion of substations.
  • Support substation design and engineering projects by validating equipment ratings, specifications, and technical requirements.
  • Prepare technical reports and present study results to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Support lifecycle of system studies projects from proposal to close-out.

Your Impact

The Substation Studies Engineer is responsible for performing power system analyses to support the planning, design, operation, and expansion of transmission and distribution substations. As a substation studies engineer, you will develop and validate system models, perform technical studies, evaluate equipment performance, and provide recommendations to ensure reliable and compliant operation of the power system and substation design.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform power system studies including load flow, short‑circuit, insulation coordination (including switching and lightning, GIS Transient overvoltage analyses), temporary overvoltage (TOV), arc flash, grounding, and protection coordination studies.
  • Develop and review power system models and conduct analyses to support the planning, design, operation, and expansion of transmission and distribution substations.
  • Support substation design and engineering projects by establishing, reviewing, and validating equipment ratings, specifications, and technical requirements.
  • Prepare technical reports and present study results to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Support system studies project(s) throughout the whole lifecycle (i.e., from the technical bid/proposal to execution, reports, client meetings/presentations, to close‑out).
  • Work closely with the team members across North America and globally.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in electrical engineering from a recognized institution.
  • Minimum 4 years of direct experience with power system studies.
  • Experience with power system studies using ETAP, SKM and PSCAD or other equivalents.
  • Knowledge of applicable industry standards such as IEC, IEEE and CIGRE.
  • Exceptional problem‑solving and analytical capabilities with a focus on achieving results.
  • Team player with outstanding interpersonal, communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability and willingness to travel within North America.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of programming languages to streamline studies using Python.
  • Professional Engineer (PE or PEng) license or eligibility to obtain.
Salary

The base salary range for this position is $114,000.00 to $149,700.00, reflecting the minimum and maximum target for new‑hire salaries across Ontario, Canada locations. Individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job‑related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
