Position Overview

Performs routine Respiratory Care procedures according to established standards in the General Patient Care areas of West Virginia University Hospitals, Inc. Adheres to the established performance expectations for WVUH employees in the areas of People, Service Performance Improvement, and Shared Values and Culture.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:
  1. Licensed by West Virginia Board of Respiratory Care under a student temporary permit.
  2. Obtain certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of start date.
CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The statements described here are intended to describe the general nature of work being performed by people assigned to this position. They are not intended to be constructed as an all-inclusive list of all responsibilities and duties. Other duties may be assigned.

  1. Set up and maintenance of low flow oxygen devices of 6 LPM or less, including nasal cannula or simple mask.
  2. Set up and maintenance of aerosol devices with Fi02 of equal to or less than 50%.
  3. Delivery of medications through a spontaneous small volume nebulizer.
  4. Medication delivery via Metered Dose Inhaler (MDI) or dry powder inhaler.
  5. Measurement of peak flow.
  6. Measurement of simple spirometry.
  7. Measurement of pulse oximetry.
  8. Use of airway clearance devices or techniques: therapy vest, chest physiotherapy, incentive spirometry, suctioning via artificial airway, and positive expiratory pressure therapies.
  9. Perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation after Basic Life Support Certification.
  10. Communicate effectively with the healthcare team regarding patient care.
  11. Assist with patient and family/caregiver education.
  12. Maintain clinical and professional competency according to standards of practice.
  13. Stay updated with current practices through policy review, training modules, newsletters, and departmental meetings.
  14. Perform departmental competencies.
  15. Note: Holders of the student temporary permit are prohibited from positive pressure procedures such as IPPB, Bi-Level, and CPAP devices.
  16. Work under supervision of a licensed respiratory therapist, who must be present on-site and available for consultation.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Ability to stand and walk for extended periods and lift, push, or pull up to 40 pounds.
