Job summary

Okanagan College is seeking a Student Employee – Indigenous Services Peer Mentor to support Indigenous students and visitors on campus. You will participate in training, inform visitors about IAS, and help peers engage in events while assisting navigation through the College environment.

Under supervision, you will organize the Indigenous Centre, submit forms, and attend IAS and campus activities, focusing on a student-first approach and community engagement.

Qualifications

• Minimum 1 year in an accredited post-secondary program and active enrollment at Okanagan College.
• Prior work experience is an asset.
• Basic understanding of Aboriginal people and culture.

Responsibilities

• Participate in peer mentor training, meetings and check-ins with Indigenous Access Services (IAS) staff.
• Inform visitors and peers about IAS.
• Engage with Indigenous Centre peers and encourage participation in social events.
• Assist with navigation through the College environment.
• Submit completed student help forms to supervisor.
• Assist with and attend IAS and campus events.
• Organize and tidy the Indigenous Centre regularly.

Your Opportunity

In accordance with Letter of Understanding #1 – Student Employees, and under supervision of the Indigenous Access & Services Coordinator and in coordination with the Indigenous Transition Planner, the Student Employee – Indigenous Services Peer Mentor will:

Functions and Duties

1. Participate in peer mentor training, meetings and check-ins with Indigenous Access Services (IAS) staff
2. Inform visitors and peers aboutIAS
3. Engage with all peers in the Indigenous Centre and inform and encourage them to engage in social events
4. Assist on how to navigate through the College environment
5. Submit completed student help forms to supervisor
6. Assist with and attendIASand campus events
7. Organize and tidy the Indigenous Centre on regular basis

Education and Experience

• Minimum 1 year in an accredited post-secondary program and be registered in a post-secondary program at Okanagan College
• Prior work experience is an asset.
