Job summary

A local governmental organization in Cobourg is seeking a Student Assistant in Engineering for a full-time position from May 4 to August 28, 2026. This role entails assisting with various engineering-related tasks, including evaluations and inspections of transportation assets. Ideal candidates are students who have completed at least one year in an accredited civil or environmental program and possess a valid Class G driver's license. Competitive hourly rate offered.

Job description

Currently, we are looking to fill the following vacancy:

  • Contract, full-time
  • May 4, 2026, to August 28, 2026
  • Hourly rate: $18.75 – $20.29 (35 hours per week)
  • Work Location: 555 Courthouse Road, Cobourg

Reporting to the Manager of Infrastructure, our Student Assistant, Engineering will assist in a variety of administrative, engineering, maintenance, and construction related tasks for transportation assets (roads, bridges, culverts, signs, guiderail). A major responsibility of this position will be to assist the infrastructure division with data collection for assets, periodic construction inspection and daily inspection reports, quantity measurements, and some administrative assignments.

Duties will include
  • Assist with pavement condition evaluation.
  • Assist with structure condition evaluations.
  • Assist with guiderail inspections.
  • Assist with field collection of other assets.
  • Assist with transportation and waste construction inspection and quality control.
  • Assist with collection of survey data for road and/or waste projects.
  • Assisting with the review of minor design assignments.
  • Assist with any road operations activities including traffic control.
Qualifications & skills
  • You have completed at least one year of civil or environmental program from a Canadian accredited college or university.
  • You are knowledgeable of basic civil engineering principles.
  • You have the ability to work individually, as well as part of a team.
  • Experience working in a roadside environment would be considered an asset.
  • Previous experience in construction would be considered an asset.
  • First Aid/CPR training is considered an asset.
  • You must be a fully licensed Class G driver with access to your own vehicle.

An acceptable driver’s abstract (3-year uncertified driver’s record) must be submitted with your application. Resumes submitted without an acceptable driver’s abstract will not be reviewed.

Eligibility requirements

A student is defined as a person between the ages of 18-30 at the start of the employment; registered as a full‑time student in the current academic year (2025/2026) and intends to return to school on a full‑time basis in the next academic year (2026/2027). As a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment, you are legally entitled to work in Canada. You must be available to work from May 4 to August 28, 2026.
