Job summary

Sargent & Lundy in Toronto seeks a senior lead design engineer to guide a team of structural engineers on nuclear facility projects, including new builds and upgrades.

You will apply advanced structural analysis, materials knowledge, and concrete/steel design, review calculations, develop specifications, mentor staff, and liaise with clients and other disciplines; some travel may be required. The role follows a hybrid schedule with in‑office work three days per week.

Qualifications

  • BSCE with emphasis in Structural Engineering from a Canadian Accreditation Board‑accredited program or ABET‑accredited (US) program.
  • Twenty+ years of experience in design/analysis of industrial/heavy commercial or nuclear facility structures.
  • Proficiency with structural analysis software such as STAAD, SAP2000, SAFE, STRUDL, or ANSYS.
  • Proficiency with design codes ASCE 7, AISC, and ACI.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and mentor a structural engineering team on nuclear facility projects and upgrades.
  • Interface with engineers from other disciplines and with clients.
  • Prepare, review, and guide design calculations, develop specifications, and coordinate drawing development.
  • Oversee the design of steel frames, concrete members, and foundations; ensure quality and compliance.
  • Travel to client/vendor sites for design reviews and field verification as needed.

Job Description

This is a lead design engineering position that offers a variety of interesting and challenging opportunities in structural engineering and will provide an excellent opportunity to advance your career. You will guide a team of structural engineers, interface with engineers from other disciplines, and interface directly with clients. You will have the opportunity to lead and mentor a structural engineering team on engineering projects for new nuclear facilities and upgrades and modifications to nuclear power plants in the following areas:

  • Direct application of knowledge of materials, structural analysis, structural steel design, and reinforced concrete design.
  • Work on a wide range of projects for various clients. Prepare, review, and provide guidance for design calculations, develop specifications, and work with designers for drawing development.
  • Prepare, review, or guide the structural analysis and design of steel frames, connections, concrete members, and foundations.
  • Potential to travel to client and vendor offices for design reviews and to plant site locations for construction coordination and field verification of designs.

This position is based on a hybrid work schedule and will require in-office work 3 days per week, giving you the flexibility to work remotely for two days.

Essential Skills and Experience
  • BSCE with emphasis in Structural Engineering from a Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board‑accredited undergraduate program or a US‑based ABET‑accredited program.
  • Twenty or more years of experience working as a member of a project team in the design and analysis of industrial/heavy commercial or nuclear facility structures.
  • Proficiency with structural analysis software such as STAAD, SAP2000, SAFE, STRUDL, or ANSYS.
  • Proficiency with design codes and standards such as ASCE 7, AISC, and ACI.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
Valued, but Not Required
  • MSCE degree.
  • P.Eng license.
  • On‑site construction support experience.
