Job summary

Sargent & Lundy is seeking a Structural Engineer to apply knowledge of materials, structural analysis, steel design, and reinforced concrete design on power transmission projects. You will create calculations, document designs, and prepare specifications while collaborating with clients and vendors.

The role involves design reviews, field verifications, and occasional travel, with a hybrid work arrangement allowing remote work two days per week.

Qualifications

  • Degree from a Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board‑accredited undergraduate program or a U.S. ABET‑accredited program with a strong background in materials, structural analysis, steel design, and reinforced concrete design.
  • At least 1 year of experience as a practicing structural engineer, preferably on projects involving electrical substations upgrades.
  • Effective communication with clients, providing appropriate technical details.
  • Occasional walk‑downs and site visits for scoping meetings.
  • Writing and providing support documentation for structural engineering calculations.
  • Ability to complete assignments within budget and schedule with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Technical knowledge of practical application of structural engineering, including analysis for supports, loads, and design integrity.
  • Experience with design techniques, tools, and principles for producing technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models.
  • Proficiency in MathCAD, STAAD PRO, SAP2000, SAFE, RISA‑3D, and RISA Floor.
  • Familiarity with design codes and standards such as IBC, ASCE 7, AISC, and ACI 318.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Investigate, troubleshoot, and solve a wide variety of structural engineering issues.
  • Perform structural analysis and detailed design of steel frames, connections, concrete members, equipment, and foundations.
  • Develop integrated structural designs and perform supporting calculations for the planned work.
  • Interface directly with the client and communicate technical information.
  • Prepare technical specifications for structural materials.
  • Perform independent reviews of work performed by others, including calculations and drawing preparation.
  • Coordinate and provide guidance to other engineers, project managers, client personnel, and suppliers to ensure a complete and timely design.
  • Review existing facilities to propose upgrades and replacements, presenting findings and recommendations to clients and peers.
  • Develop your career through peer‑learning by sharing knowledge with other experienced engineers via S&L’s systems of process and Communities of Practice.
  • Travel to client and vendor offices for design reviews and to substation locations for construction coordination and field verification of designs.

Description

This position will offer you the ability to directly apply your knowledge of materials, structural analysis, structural steel design, and reinforced concrete design. As a member of an engineering and design team, you will work on a wide range of power transmission modifications and upgrades to support client recommendations and reviews, including creating calculations, documenting designs, and preparing specifications.

Hybrid Work Arrangement

You will spend three days a week in the office and have the flexibility to work remotely for two days.

Qualifications

This position may require access to U.S. export‑controlled information. Candidates must be a citizen of a country listed in Appendix A to Part 810 of the Code of Federal Regulations.

Essential Skills And Experience

  • Create or use automation to generate calculations, summarize technical documents, or draft design documentation, employing AI tools with strong engineering judgment and verification of results.
  • Programming or scripting (e.g., Python, MATLAB, advanced Excel) to automate calculations, design checks, reporting, or data transformation is valued but not required.
  • Additional learning, such as a minor, certificate, or training in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Software Engineering, or related fields, is valued if it aids the application of automation or AI to real engineering problems.

Compensation Range

$56,236 – $80,862
