Stantec is seeking an experienced structural engineer to join the Fredericton NB office (and related locations in Dartmouth, NS or St. John’s NL). The candidate will lead middle-to-large scale projects, perform complex structural analyses, and develop designs with a team of engineers and drafters.

Requirements include a Bachelor’s in Engineering, a Professional Engineer license in Canada, and a minimum of eight years of relevant experience. Knowledge of STAAD.Pro and SAP2000 is preferred.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or equivalent.
Licensed Professional Engineer in a Canadian province and eligible for NB/NS/NL licensure.
Minimum of 8 years of structural engineering experience.
Graduate degree and/or PE exam valued.

Responsibilities

Lead projects of average to high complexity in structural engineering.
Evaluate, specify, and engineer all structural components for various systems.
Perform preliminary and detailed structural analysis for heavy industrial and power generation structures.
Develop designs through calculations, sketches, models, and diagrams.
Create 3D models and provide markups for junior staff.
Prepare and coordinate project documents, plans, and fabrication details.
Lead project coordination meetings with clients and consultants.
Support senior staff with scope, budget, staffing, and schedule.
Coordinate specifications with construction documents and QA/QC.

Your Key Responsibilities

Responsible for projects of average complexity/size.
Evaluates, selects, specifies, and engineers all structural components relating to various structural systems.
Performs preliminary and detailed structural analysis and design for various heavy industrial and power generation structures (industrial buildings, equipment and piping supports) with opportunities in other sectors (transmission, distribution, and substation structures, etc.).
Engages in the development of a design through engineering calculations, sketches, electronic models, diagrams, and other visual formats.
Utilizes technologies in development of three-dimensional models of structural systems and provides markups for junior engineers/ designers.
Prepares and revises documentation in various structural phases including site plans, general equipment arrangements, conceptual and detailed structural developments, detailed component design, and fabrication level assembly information.
Opportunities to lead project coordination meetings with internal team members and/or external consultants, owners and contractors, subcontractors, and vendors.
Active participant in client project meetings, value analysis and basic cost estimating.
Support senior staff with developing and managing the project scope, budget, staffing and schedule.
Leads the preparation and coordination of project specifications with construction documents.
Performs and oversees the performance of calculations using company standard software, and proprietary manufacturer software.
Participates in constructability review.
Conducts quality assurance and quality control on own projects.
Supports the development of new standards and specifications for the structural group.

Capabilities and Credentials

Strong communication, coordination, and time management skills.
Strong understanding and knowledge of engineering fundamentals and first principles.
Requisite knowledge and application of structural design codes (NBC, CSA, ASCE, AISC, ACI, etc.).
General understanding of all phases of project document production and the relationship between drawings and specifications.
Ability to participate and collaborate in project team setting and to engage in creative and critical thought.
Strong knowledge of structural systems means and methods, materials, and industry standards. Experience with heavy industrial structures is highly valued. This includes structural steel design and reinforced concrete design, for both substructures and superstructures.
Ability to check the work of others for accuracy and completeness and manage time to meet project budget and schedule.
Thorough understanding of structural engineering concepts and ability to effectively communicate ideas to others.
Experience with industry standard structural analysis software suites (STAAD.Pro, SAP 2000, etc.)
Knowledge of mathematical computational tools such as MathCAD and the ability to perform detailed structural calculations within this environment.
Knowledge of and ability to use standard computer applications including, but not limited to, Microsoft Office Suite.
Willingness to travel for project work, and possession of a valid driver’s license.

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Engineering.
Licensed Professional Engineer in a Canadian province and eligible for licensure in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland.
Minimum of 8 years of experience.
Graduate degree(s) and/or successful completion of the NCEES PE Exam are highly valued.

Please note, the final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible. Actual compensation for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on the agreed number of working hours per week.
