Job summary

Stantec’s Buildings team seeks a qualified Structural Engineer to work under general supervision on projects of varying size. You will evaluate and specify engineered systems, verify code compliance, and participate in developing designs with sketches, BIM models, and construction documents.

The role involves leading coordination meetings, performing structural calculations with standard software, and contributing to cost estimates, value analyses, and project scope management.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering and a Licensed Professional Engineer.
  • 5+ years of industry experience.
  • LEED credentials are a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate, specify, and engineer structural systems for projects.
  • Develop designs via sketches and 3D models.
  • Utilize BIM tools to create 3D models with markups.
  • Prepare drawings and documentation across structural phases.
  • Lead project coordination meetings with stakeholders.
  • Contribute to cost estimating and value analysis.
  • Assist in managing scope, budget, and schedule.
  • Coordinate specifications with construction documents.
  • Perform structural calculations using standard software.
  • Analyze elements like two-way slabs, foundations, timber/steel/concrete.
  • Contribute to constructability reviews and QA/QC.
  • Help develop new standards for the structural group.

Your Opportunity

Your role is to work with general supervision and direction on various sized projects. You will participate in the evaluation, recommendation, and specification for engineered systems or products for a project verifying compliance with applicable codes and engineering standards/practices.

Your Key Responsibilities
  • Responsible for projects of varying complexity/size
  • Evaluates, selects, specifies, and engineers all structural engineered systems or products for a project
  • Engages in the development of a design through sketches, electronic models, diagrams, and other visual formats
  • Utilizes BIM technologies in development of three-dimensional models of building’s structural systems and provides markups for junior engineers/designers
  • Prepares and revises documentation in various structural phases including site plans, floor plans, diagrams, and details
  • Leads project coordination meetings with internal team members and/or external consultants, owner and contractor, sub-contractors, and vendors
  • Participate in client project requirement meetings and value analysis and basic cost estimating
  • Assists senior-level staff with developing and managing the project scope, budget, deliverables, staffing and schedule
  • Leads the preparation and coordination of the project specifications with construction documents
  • Performs and oversees the performance of calculations using company standard software, and proprietary manufacturer software
  • Utilizes advanced techniques for the analysis of specialized building elements such as two-way slabs, prestressed concrete, piled foundations and superstructures constructed with timber, steel and concrete.
  • Participates in constructability reviews.
  • Conducts quality assurance and quality control on own projects.
  • Assists in the development of new standards and specifications for the structural group
Your Capabilities and Credentials
  • Requisite knowledge and application of structural design codes, standards, and applicable building codes
  • General understanding of all phases of project document production and the relationship between drawings and specifications
  • Strong knowledge of structural systems, means and methods, materials, and industry standards
  • Experience in designing steel, concrete, timber, and masonry
  • Ability to check the work of others for accuracy and completeness and manage time to meet project budget and schedule
  • Ability to participate and collaborate in project team setting and to engage in creative and critical thought
  • Thorough understanding of structural engineering concepts and ability to effectively communicate ideas to others
  • Advanced oral and written communication skills
  • Presentation and interview skills are preferred
  • Experience in project management
  • Requires understanding of Microsoft Office Suite, Revit; Prefer experience with Newforma, AutoCAD; Comprehensive Building Analysis Software such as SAFI, S-Frame, StaadPro and ETABS
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Engineering & Licensed Professional Engineer.
  • 5 years of experience or greater within the industry.
  • LEED Green Associate or LEED AP is a benefit.
