Job summary

RRC Power and Energy seeks a Structural Designer II to contribute to foundation and structural systems across projects. You will perform analyses, develop drawings, and coordinate with drafting and project teams.

The role emphasizes client interfacing, QA/QC, and adherence to codes, with flexible remote options and opportunities to work from Calgary, Toronto, or Denver offices.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
  • 2–4 years of structural engineering consulting and design experience.
  • Proficiency in STAAD Pro; experience with CAD/Civil 3D, LPILE, MFAD, RISA, MathCAD, PLS-CADD, TOWER, and POLE preferred.
  • Experience supporting permitting, engineering design, and construction activities.
  • Strong written, verbal, and presentation skills with client service focus.

Responsibilities

  • Perform structural analysis and design for foundation systems (direct embed, piers, footings, piles, caissons).
  • Design pole and support structures using wood, tubular steel, lattice steel, precast, laminated wood.
  • Design retaining wall systems (soldier piles, rock anchors, grouting).
  • Review geotechnical reports, survey data, and materials testing results for analyses.
  • Coordinate with Drafting Group to develop constructible CAD drawings.
  • Plan and manage structural scope of work, scheduling, and deliverables.
  • Interface with clients to clarify requirements and provide value engineering solutions.
  • Collaborate with Project Managers and Civil/Substation/Transmission teams.
  • Maintain responsiveness to client needs and evolving project requirements.
  • Evaluate environmental impacts and project-related risks.
  • Deliver optimized designs in compliance with codes, standards and best practices.
  • Ensure designs meet project specifications, regulatory requirements, and health and safety standards.
  • Prepare construction specifications and material specifications.
  • Develop bills of materials (BOMs).
  • Establish, implement, and adhere to QA/QC procedures.
  • Manage multiple concurrent projects and day-to-day execution.

Job DetailsJob Location: Remote - Canada - Calgary, AB T2A 6W9 Position Type: Full Time RRC is seeking a talented Structural Designer II to help us build the future of U.S. energy production from our Denver, CO offices in the US, or Toronto, ON or Calgary, AB offices in Canada. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Perform structural analysis and design for a wide range of foundation systems, including direct embed, drilled piers, spread footings, piles, caissons
  • Analyze and design pole and support structures constructed of wood, tubular steel, lattice steel, precast concrete, fiber-reinforced materials, and laminated wood
  • Design retaining wall systems, including soldier pile walls, rock anchors, and grouting solutions
  • Review and interpret geotechnical reports, survey data, mapping, and materials testing results to support engineering analyses using industry-standard modeling software
  • Coordinate with the Drafting Group to develop accurate and constructible design drawings using CAD tools
  • Plan, define, and manage structural scope of work, including task definition, scheduling, and on-time delivery of project deliverables
  • Interface directly with clients to clarify project requirements and provide value engineering solutions
  • Collaborate closely with Project Managers and Civil, Substation, and Transmission engineering teams to ensure successful project execution
  • Maintain responsiveness to client needs and evolving project requirements
  • Evaluate environmental impacts and project-related risks associated with structural designs
  • Deliver optimized structural engineering designs in compliance with applicable codes, standards, and industry best practices
  • Ensure designs meet project specifications, regulatory requirements, and health and safety standards
  • Prepare construction specifications and material specifications
  • Develop bills of materials (BOMs)
  • Establish, implement, and adhere to QA/QC procedures
  • Manage multiple concurrent projects, including day-to-day execution and coordination of assigned work
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES)
  • Minimum of 2-4 years of structural engineering consulting and design experience
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Civil or Structural Engineering
  • Proficiency in STAAD Pro required; experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D, LPILE, MFAD, RISA, MathCAD, PLS-CADD, TOWER, and POLE preferred
  • Experience supporting permitting, engineering design, and construction activities
  • Substation engineering consulting experience preferred
  • Proficient in the Microsoft Office Suite
  • Strong written, verbal, and presentation skills, with a demonstrated focus on client service
  • Self-motivated professional capable of exercising independent judgment
  • Proven ability to manage multiple tasks and rapidly adapt to shifting priorities
  • Working knowledge of applicable design codes and standards, including IBC, ASCE, AISC/ANSI, ACI, ASTM, NESC, and IEEE
