Job description

Join to apply for the Structural Design Engineer role at Alpine, an ITW Company

Alpine, an ITW company, is a leading provider of building component software, equipment, and industry-leading service to component manufacturers. We partner with our customers to improve their businesses and enhance productivity, delivering innovative software solutions to the construction industry to increase profitability.

Job Description

Alpine is seeking an Engineer to provide customers with wood and/or steel truss designs that are both economically feasible and structurally sound, utilizing design aids and engineering judgment. The Engineer will independently evaluate, select, and apply standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria, making minor adaptations and modifications to truss designs. Additionally, the Engineer will support and provide technical input for Alpine’s engineering software development.

Primary Responsibilities

  1. Review, correct, and complete all customer-generated designs according to specifications and engineering principles, applying general engineering notes as needed.
  2. Provide technical consultation to customers regarding engineering needs, review designs and processes, and assist with questions, design improvements, and calculation of special loads.
  3. Design trusses using proprietary software, based on documents, verbal instructions, or framing layout plans submitted by customers, applying principles of statics and strength of materials.
  4. Perform nonstandard or moderately complex designs and frame analyses, including simple repairs, without re-evaluating the entire structural system.
  5. Review assignments of designers, drafters, and technicians for accuracy and completeness prior to customer delivery.
  6. Proficiency in plating methods, steel connection techniques, design manuals, and span tables.
  7. Knowledge of relevant design policies, standards, and building codes.
  8. Provide high-quality customer service, meeting all design turnaround deadlines.
  9. Perform other duties as assigned.

Competencies

  • Customer Focus: Prioritize customer needs in decision-making and service practices.
  • Personal Effectiveness: Self-aware, able to analyze situations, act ethically, and maintain composure under pressure.
  • Drive for Results: Set high performance standards and work diligently to meet or exceed them.
  • Active Learning: Quickly adapt to new projects and learn up-to-date engineering principles and standards.
  • Adaptability: Adjust to new information and changing priorities with creative solutions.

Job Requirements

  • BSc in Civil Engineering or related discipline with core knowledge in statics, strength of materials, and structural analysis.
  • Canadian EIT Certification preferred; P.Eng certification is an asset.
  • Familiarity with drafting techniques, truss terms, and technical engineering terminology.
  • Ability to interpret roof layouts, structural, and architectural plans, and perform truss takeoffs.
  • Proficiency in MS Office.
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills in English; French skills are a plus.
  • Approximately 10% travel may be required.
