Do you want to make a meaningful impact within your community? Do you have front-line, social services, or customer service experience? The Mustard Seed is looking for Street Level Worker who will be tasked to provide a safe and welcoming environment for guests, donors, and volunteers.

Street Level Support Worker will have a broad working knowledge of all areas of The Mustard Seed’s Basic Services. This position will assist community participants in accessing resources, participating in programs, as well as maintaining a safe and welcoming environment where staff, participants, and volunteers become a life-giving community that nurtures hope, health, and transformation. Crisis intervention and de-escalation resolution will be expected for the role as well.

Employment Type: Permanent Part-time (32 hours per week)
Schedule: Friday, Saturday, and Monday 7:30 A.M. – 3:30 P.M. and Sunday 10:30 A.M. to 6:30 P.M./ Friday to Monday 10:30 A.M. to 6:30 P.M.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Welcome community members, visitors, and other stakeholders into our centre; sign in guests in our information database, conduct intakes and program evaluation with guests.
  • Create a safe, healthy, and respectful environment for all community participants accessing our services and programs.
  • Perform periodic internal and perimeter safety checks during hours of operation.
  • Foster meaningful relationships with community members, volunteers, coworkers, supervisors, and other stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with community members to encourage positive changes in lifestyle and behavior through supportive relationships and day-to-day interactions.
  • Support community members’ dignity by seeking to identify their needs in a respectful manner.
  • Maintain specific records such as statistics, reports, incident reports, and other computer files.
  • Manage and organize incoming and outgoing mail for both staff and community members.
  • Handle tasks such as faxing, photocopying, and maintaining the calendar of events.
  • Support and participate in creating, implementing, and facilitating programs.
  • Ensure daily tidiness and cleanliness of the work area in addition to participating in daily sanitization of high touch areas.
  • Provide non-violent crisis intervention and use de-escalation techniques as required.
  • Promote programming to the community members and encourage community members to participate in programs.
  • Maintain a high level of confidentiality and professionalism.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Respond to conflicts in a healthy, respectful and safe manner.
  • Model healthy relationships with community participants and volunteers through listening, advising, and providing appropriate referrals.
  • Assist community participants in accessing The Mustard Seed’s services, including the drop-In programs and activities, registration for pop up events, and/or booking appointments.
  • Assist with onsite Food Services programs as needed.
  • Participate in all staff training (e.g., First Aid, ASIST, Non-violent Crisis Intervention, etc.) and attend meetings as required.
  • Enforce guest suspensions when necessary.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:

  • Post secondary Degree or Diploma preferred.
  • Knowledge within the field of community development and community resilience initiatives is an asset.
  • Front line experience working directly with vulnerable groups, such as those facing homelessness, poverty, mental illness, and addiction, is beneficial.
  • Experience working with families with children and seniors is an asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage, communicate, and work effectively with a diverse range of people from various cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.
  • A self-starter and able to work well in a cross-functional team, with strong collaboration skills.
  • Good relationship building and communication skills.
  • Strong conflict resolution and de-escalation skills.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • The position requires a flexible schedule with some shifts occurring in the evening or on weekends.
  • Fast paced and demanding work environment.
  • Moderate physical effort is required. Considerable periods of standing, walking, cleaning, sorting, lifting, and typing; mainly indoors and some outdoors.
  • Moderate mental effort is required to pre-emptively identify and assess conflict, problem solve, maintain healthy boundaries, and provide empathetic support for people facing extreme personal struggles.
  • May be exposed to or required to respond to overdoses and other verbal or physical incidents.
  • Employees are to be aware that many of our clients may experience difficulties or impairment at times, which could result in them uttering threats, discriminatory statements, and other insults at your person. This may in a raised voice, or in seeing unpredictable behaviour up to and including the possibility of them becoming aggressive.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must have legal authorization to work in Canada on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer.
