Job Description

Position Purpose Summary: The role involves providing service to customers, sorting incoming products, and supporting ongoing retail operations at The Salvation Army Thrift Store.

Accountabilities

The incumbent may perform all or some of the following duties:

  • Operations: Greet and interact positively and courteously with customers and donors. Contribute to meeting sales targets, provide excellent customer service, and handle difficult situations tactfully. Maintain knowledge of product pricing and sale items, ensuring the integrity of donated goods. Follow store opening and closing procedures. Accurately process transactions, including cash and debit sales, with minimal errors. Adhere to store policies regarding payments, refunds, and holds. Process donations by loading, sorting, packing, hanging, and pricing. Respond to customer inquiries about stock. Monitor store security and assist with layout and display arrangements. Manage inventory by sorting, hanging, and pricing stock, and assist with donation turnover. Handle merchandise safely, organize stock rotation, and contribute to recycling efforts. Assist donors and maintain proper sorting and pricing standards. Perform additional duties as required.
  • Health and Safety: Contribute to a safe environment by maintaining cleanliness, organization, and safety standards. Assist with snow removal, fire exit clearance, spill clean-up, and obstacle removal. Comply with OH&S regulations and store policies. Perform routine cleaning of the store and common areas.

Critical Relationship Management

Engage in routine interactions with internal staff (Store Manager, officers, volunteers) and external contacts (guests, vendors).

Managerial/Technical Responsibilities

Report directly to the Store Manager. No direct reports.

Financial and Material Management

  • Manage moderate material responsibilities and organizational assets according to guidelines. Do not handle financial transactions or have budget responsibilities.

All responsibilities should align with The Salvation Army’s mission and uphold its code of conduct.

Working Conditions

  • This is a permanent full-time role with varying weekly schedules, including weekdays and Saturdays. The position requires standing for long periods, frequent bending, twisting, and reaching, and lifting up to 30 pounds. Precautionary measures, such as gloves when handling unknown contents, are required.

Education, Experience, and Qualifications

  • Willingness to understand and support The Salvation Army’s mission in Canada. Compliance with health and safety policies is mandatory. Alternative education and experience combinations will be considered.

Education, Qualifications, and Certifications

  • Some high school coursework completed; alternative combinations of education and experience may be accepted.

Experience and Knowledge

  • Several months of experience in processing, distribution, or customer service. Knowledge of lifting guidelines. Cash handling experience required. Familiarity with cash registers and related procedures. Product brand awareness is a plus. Experience in a computerized environment is preferred.

Skills and Capabilities

  • Attention to detail, self-motivation, ability to work independently and as part of a team. Good interpersonal and communication skills. Physically capable of lifting up to 29 lbs frequently, including bending, twisting, pulling, and pushing.

Ability to successfully undergo screening and background checks as required.

Compensation
