Accountabilities
Job Description:
The incumbent may perform all, some, or similar range of duties:
- Operations
- Greet and interact with customers/donors in a positive, friendly, and courteous manner.
- Contribute to meeting store sales targets; provide efficient courteous customer service; use tact when dealing with difficult customers.
- Be knowledgeable regarding product pricing and featured sale products; protect the integrity of all donated items.
- Maintain store opening and closing procedures as required.
- Responsible for accurate completion of all customer transactions including cash and debit sales with minimal voids, overages, or shortages.
- Adhere to store policy regarding cheques, credit cards, refunds, voids, and holds.
- Process raw materials by loading/unloading, sorting, packing, hanging, pricing, and storing donations.
- Possess knowledge of stock in order to respond to customer enquiries by phone/in person.
- Pay attention to store security, by monitoring activity within the store.
- Assist with store layout plans to attract customers, including window displays and merchandise displays; ensure attractiveness of the store through tidy maintenance.
- Contribute to inventory control by retrieving, sorting, hanging, and pricing as directed.
- Assist with donation turnover, replenish inventory levels on the sales floor, and remove inventory as directed.
- Handle merchandise safely and organize; assist in stock rotation; recycle textiles and metal as appropriate.
- Assist donors with contributions, unload donations, and place stock appropriately.
- Maintain proper sorting and processing of goods, ensure compliance with quality standards, and correct pricing per store policy.
- Perform other duties as required.
- Health and Safety
- Contribute to the safety of staff and customers (e.g., snow removal, clear fire exits, clean spillage, no obstacles inside/outside the store).
- Maintain an attractive, organized, and safe store appearance, including tidying shelves, cleaning, sweeping, dusting, and mopping; rotate cleaning of common areas.
- Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and adhere to The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
Perform other work-related duties as assigned.
Critical Relationship Management
Conducts routine interactions and clarifies information with:
- Internal: Store Manager, Corps Officer(s), volunteers, staff
- External: Guests, vendors
Managerial/Technical Responsibilities
Reports directly to the Store Manager. No direct reports.
Financial and Material Management
- Moderate material responsibilities.
- Uses or maintains organization assets according to guidelines.
- Does not process financial transactions; no budget responsibilities.
All responsibilities must align with The Salvation Army’s mission, conducted professionally, and uphold our code of conduct.
Working Conditions
- Permanent part-time position.
- Schedule may vary weekly, including weekdays and Saturdays.
- Requires standing for long periods, frequent twisting, bending, crouching, reaching; ability to lift/move 30 pounds.
- Follow health and safety precautions, including universal precautions such as gloves when handling unknown contents.
Education, Experience, and Qualifications
- Willingness to understand and support the mission of The Salvation Army in Canada.
- Compliance with OH&S Act and safety policies.
- Alternative education and experience combinations may be considered.
Education, Qualifications, and Certifications
- Some high school coursework completed.
- Experience and education may be combined.
Experience and Knowledge
- Few months of experience in processing/distribution of goods or customer service.
- Knowledge of lifting guidelines.
- Cash handling experience required.
- Experience with cash registers, bank deposits, reports, etc.
- Product brand awareness is a plus.
- Experience in a computerized environment.
Skills and Capabilities
- Attention to detail.
- Self-motivated and disciplined.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Good interpersonal and oral communication skills.
- Physically capable of lifting/carrying up to 29 lbs frequently, including bending, twisting, pulling, pushing.
Ability to pass screening and background checks satisfactorily.
Compensation
Target salary range: $17.20 to $20.01, maximum $24.01.
Salary placement based on market, internal equity, and candidate qualifications.
