Job description

Alarm.com is a rapidly expanding technology company developing innovative cloud and device solutions across a wide range of cutting-edge technologies that provide a unified, connected service to millions of residential and commercial properties in the US and abroad. We are looking for a talented and passionate Staff Embedded Software Engineer for the Device Engineering team to help us define the future of the Internet-of-Things for residential and commercial properties by creating and integrating devices including security panels, networking gateways, and video cameras. You will be working with a team of talented engineers across a diverse set of technological backgrounds to design devices, build and manufacture hardware, architect and implement software, and collaborate in an agile and fast-paced environment.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Own product-level architecture and technical direction for embedded C/C++ software across multiple concurrent projects, driving consensus on complex trade-offs and defining team engineering standards.
  • Lead cross-functional project delivery — coordinating with QE, SE, PM, and external partners, holding the team accountable to deadlines, and escalating technical risks to resolution.
  • Develop, test, and debug embedded software on Linux-based platforms for devices including security panels, networking gateways, and video cameras.

  • Integrate on‑device sensors into the embedded software stack, translating sensor data into reliable, responsive user‑facing features on the Alarm.com platform.
  • Mentor senior and junior engineers, define team processes, and drive adoption of modern development practices including AI‑assisted tooling.
  • Other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical/Computer Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 8+ years of embedded software development with strong C/C++ proficiency on Linux-based platforms.
  • Deep expertise in Linux platform build toolchains (Yocto, buildroot, OpenWRT, or Android AOSP), including cross‑compilation, kernel configuration, and BSP development.
  • Experience with embedded connectivity technologies such as cellular (LTE, Cat‑M, 5G), Wi‑Fi, Ethernet, and IoT protocols including Z‑Wave, Zigbee, and Matter.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead product‑level architecture decisions, decompose complex system problems, and coordinate multi‑project technical delivery.
  • Strong communication skills with experience explaining technical trade‑offs to stakeholders and mentoring engineers across experience levels.
