Job summary

Thomson Reuters seeks a Staff Software Engineer for Content Tools to set technical direction for tools that expose governed access to proprietary legal content. You will own API design, evaluation, and end-to-end quality across production tooling, with on-call ownership and collaboration with CoCounsel Engineering, TR Labs, and product teams.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
• 8+ years of software engineering with leadership experience (staff level or equivalent).
• Mastery of Python and fundamentals of API design, testing, and security.
• Experience designing API-first systems with versioning and clear contracts.
• Strong information-retrieval concepts (precision/recall) and evaluation frameworks.
• Proven reliability ownership: on-call, SLOs, incident response.
• Security and access-control practices; secure deployment.
• Excellent written and verbal communication across engineering and product teams.

Responsibilities

• Define design patterns, schemas, and contribution standards for Content Tools.
• Drive API-first, contract-driven approach with versioned contracts and ownership metadata.
• Architect retrieval and search layer (Vespa-based) and trade-offs between structured and semantic retrieval.
• Define agent invocation model and latency budgets for multi-hop retrieval chains.
• Build shared development and testing infra (Python, FastAPI, Claude SDK) for Content Tools.
