About this opportunity

As a Staff Operations Engineer, you will play a key role in optimizing the performance, reliability, and profitability of Cenovus’s surface assets within the Lloydminster Thermal district. You will provide technical leadership across SAGD processing facilities, raw water production assets, and distribution networks, identifying opportunities to improve plant performance, resolve operational challenges, and maximize value. Working closely with Operations, Engineering, Maintenance, and Capital Projects teams, you will influence cross‑functional solutions, support strategic initiatives, and contribute to the ongoing development of site capabilities.

What you’ll do
  • Optimize Thermal SAGD facility performance and throughput within Safe Operating Limits by monitoring operations, identifying bottlenecks and improvement opportunities, resolving time‑sensitive production issues, developing scopes for new projects, and reducing operating costs through process optimisation.
  • Provide operational support and troubleshooting across three to four thermal assets, while managing high‑priority commitments and providing technical stewardship to a team of one to three site operations engineers to maintain safe and reliable operations.
  • Act as a safety leader by promoting safety as a core value and supporting key process safety activities, including Safe Operating Limits, process safety event calculations and investigations, process hazard analyses and asset HAZOPs, and risk assessments for projects and Management of Change (MOC) activities.
  • Partner with Operations to complete detailed monthly P&L reviews, identify and act on key production, cost and value drivers, and strengthen business acumen and ownership across the operating area.
  • Provide engineering support for repairs, mechanical alterations, and new equipment installations; review repeat repairs and equipment failures to identify recurring issues and recommend equipment or infrastructure modifications that improve reliability, performance, and asset integrity.
  • Be an active part of front‑end engineering activities that support delivery of the long‑range plan, including project identification, technical scoping and design, cost estimating, economic analysis, and preparation of project justification materials aligned with corporate priorities and budgets.
  • Support turnaround and outage planning, including scope development, identifying production impacts, and engineering support through execution.
  • Steward or contribute to key business processes and initiatives (Monthly Production Reporting, Lost Production Allocation, Value Threat Management, Thermal Raw Water Management, Threat Assessment Process).
  • Support regulatory and emissions compliance.
Who you are
  • Legally authorized to work in Canada.
  • Post‑secondary in Chemical Engineering.
  • P. Eng. designation from APEGS (or eligible to apply for P.Eng with APEGA).
  • Minimum 12+ years relevant experience.
  • Experience in SAGD or Thermal Operations Engineering considered an asset.
  • For this position you will be required to maintain a Class 5 driver’s licence, a satisfactory driving record, and adhere to the appropriate Company policies and guidelines. A driver’s abstract will be one of the background checks requested in the pre‑employment screening for the final candidate.

Note: The application deadline for this position is 11:59 PM MT October 20, 2026.

Internal candidates that are currently in a lower grade will be assessed based on their sustained job performance, how they demonstrate the expected organizational competency behaviours and values and in discussions with their current leader prior to resolving next steps.
