Job summary

Burns & McDonnell is seeking a Staff Project Engineer in Toronto, ON, to guide design efforts for Food & Beverage facilities within Design-only and Design-Build/EPC settings. You will coordinate disciplines, budgets, and schedules, while ensuring safety and quality commitments are met across the project lifecycle.

You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, lead technical reviews, and contribute to problem solving from design through commissioning.

Qualifications

Bachelor degree in Engineering; 3+ years of detailed engineering design experience for design-only and EPC projects.
Strong facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization and problem solving skills.
Highly effective communicator with clear and concise writing and presentation skills.
High level of attention to detail.
Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.
Ability to lead workplans, schedules and budgets and guide a diverse project team; EIT/PE preferred.

Responsibilities

Direct discipline and overall engineering design efforts for Design-only and/or EPC projects.
Develop discipline man-hour budgets and WBS codes.
Draft overall engineering man-hour budgets.
Perform internal quality and completeness reviews of engineering deliverables.

As a Staff Project Engineer, you will play a critical role in supporting and guiding the successful execution of complex Food & Beverage projects. You will collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams throughout the project lifecycle, contributing to project planning, design development, technical decision-making, and coordination across engineering, procurement, and construction functions. Your work will help ensure projects meet client expectations, regulatory standards, and Burns & McDonnell's commitment to safety, quality, and innovation.

The Staff Project Engineer will provide high-level direction to all engineering design efforts for both Design-only and Design-Build/EPC projects. Design-only work will support the full engineering scope required for traditional design-bid-build delivery, while Design-Build/EPC projects will encompass integrated engineering, procurement, and construction management activities. In this role, you will help establish design criteria, coordinate technical disciplines, support scope development, and ensure engineering deliverables are produced accurately and efficiently. You will also support project execution across the various manufacturing business lines while maintaining a primary focus on Food & Beverage facilities. Responsibilities include assisting with project schedules, budgets, risk assessments, technical reviews, and interdisciplinary coordination. You will contribute to problem-solving during design and construction, maintain strong communication across teams and clients, and help drive successful outcomes on time and within budget. This role offers the opportunity to build leadership skills, influence project direction, and grow into increasing responsibility within Burns & McDonnell's integrated project delivery environment.

Direct discipline and overall engineering design efforts for Design-only and/or EPC projects.
Develop discipline man-hour budgets and work breakdown structure (WBS) codes.
Draft overall engineering man-hour budgets.
Perform independent quality and completeness reviews of engineering deliverables.
Coordinate schedule, budget and progress measurement functions with project controls teams.
Coordinate discipline design change notifications and draft client change orders.
Direct field engineering services from home office and/or field locations.
Prepare project cost estimates.
Prepare subcontract plan and subcontractor bid and award packages.
Prepare turnover and start-up plans.
Responsible for the implementation and use of in-house and client design and construction specifications.
Maintain project action item lists and design RFI l.
Perform internal and client design reviews.
Direct internal progress, status and review meetings: publish meeting minutes.
Prepare monthly client status reports.
Monitor discipline progress with vendor submittals
Direct vendor expediting efforts.
Develop vendor quality oversight plans.
Direct procurement process (equipment, piping, instruments, etc.)
Ensure compliance with company and site safety policies.
Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Bachelor Degree in Engineering from an accredited university and 3 years of detailed engineering design experience for design-only and/or EPC projects.
Strong facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization and problem solving skills.
Highly effective communicator with clear and concise writing and presentation skills.
High level of attention to detail.
Proficient computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite).
Ability to develop and manage workplans, schedules and budgets and provide leadership to a diverse project team a plus.
Engineers in Training-EIT Certification Preferred
Professional Engineer (PE) License Preferred

Compensation

The expected compensation range for this position is $105,000.00 - $135,000.00 annually, in compliance with Ontario's Pay Transparency requirements. Final compensation will be based on education, qualifications, prior experience, and work location. The total annual compensation package will consist of a base salary and eligibility to participate in our discretionary year-end incentive bonus program.
