Mission

The Software Engineer 4 carries individual responsibility for the successful analysis, design, and implementation of software subsystems and modules that have been assigned. The incumbent is also responsible for addressing customer requirements, performing complex development activities requiring extensive research and analysis, leading and mentoring junior staff members, developing project schedules and ensuring schedules are met, and participating in design meetings. As a member of the Software Engineering team, the incumbent carries collective responsibility for the successful implementation of the Company’s software product releases and systems.

Responsibilities
  • Follows the SDLC, Software Development Lifecycle using Software Engineering best practices as described in the OSI documented processes and training.
  • Follows the coding standards and best practices to write high quality source code in C and C++.
  • Participates in peer reviews of the source code and ensures all development is maintained in the version control repository.
  • Prepares software specifications and manages requirements for new software features.
  • Produces software detailed designs and makes regular updates to the design documents when changes are made.
  • Maintains the code by correcting defects (bugs) and troubleshooting system problem reports and customer tickets.
  • Demonstrates full ownership for their work, resolving road blocks, and communicates deadlines and technical challenges to their Technical Lead or Manager.
  • Makes recommendations and suggesting alternative solutions when needed.
  • Produces software estimates and participates in technical work breakdown and defining scope.
  • Identifies, analyzes, and resolves diverse software technical challenges.
  • Commits to project objectives and meeting the project schedule and budgets.
  • Provides technical expertise and reviews of documentation including the publications developed by the Technical Publication group.
  • Produces software technical documentation which supports the project or department needs.
  • May take on additional responsibilities as a Technical Lead, delegating work, tracking work, building teams moral, helping to move team road blocks and reporting on behalf of the team to the Project Manager.
  • May participate in the concept phase including the creation of prototypes or use cases.
  • May conduct extensive research and/or analysis when developing designs or reports that meet complex client needs (i.e. Safety Cases, Framework or Tool Selection, new Customer Furnished Equipment).
  • Provides support to multidisciplinary teams and sales teams as a subject matter expert.
  • Provides technical guidance and mentoring to new staff including participation in onboarding and the buddy program.
  • May interface and provide support and assistance to customers while visiting sites or ships.
  • Demonstrates professionalism when interfacing with customer and prioritizes customer requests.
  • Commits to prioritizing and correcting Usability, Safety and Security concerns.
  • Makes recommendations for changes to software development guidelines, tools and standards, and assists in the creation and rollout of new improvements.
  • Complies with OSI’s established ISO-9001-compliant development guidelines and standards.
  • Follows and ensures workplace operating and environmental, health and safety procedures and guideline compliance.
Decision Making & Authority
  • Single point of accountability to deliver assigned work.
  • Applies judgment and makes decisions to resolve routine and complex issues.
  • Considerable judgment necessary in the construction of the software source code and the resolution of assigned defects.
  • May be asked to participate temporarily in a design authority role, which provides additional authority to review and approve decisions for projects and products while in this role.
Knowledge & Qualifications
  • Education: Degree in Computer Science, Software, Electrical or Computer Engineering, Engineering Physics or Mathematics.
  • Experience: 8-10 years’ experience in a software environment; experience in developing real‑time interfaces to external systems; experience working in an ISO 9001 compliant software engineering environment would be an asset; experience in the defense or aerospace domains is an asset.
  • Technical Skills: Experience in C/C++ development under Windows in areas such as 2D/3D graphics, Open GL, TCP/IP, GPS, UDP Multicast, and real‑time systems are highly desirable; ability to understand and work with complex software requirement specifications; strong theoretical and algorithmic background with experience in mathematical and/or geospatial applications; ability to assist with analysis and design of solutions for algorithmically complex requirements.
  • Soft Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills; uses strong communication skills to ask questions, provide technical solutions and help build a strong team environment; ability to learn quickly and work well under pressure in a high‑paced, challenging environment; strong team work skills; takes full ownership of any mistakes that are made and corrects the situation.
  • Other: Required to obtain security clearance; occasional travel; knowledge of marine navigation concepts and systems is an asset.
