Mission

The Software Team Lead at OSI has the primary responsibility of providing leadership of a small engineering team to ensure the delivery of high‑quality software products. The Lead supports the Software Engineering Manager in cultivating and maintaining an optimal software engineering program and is a key contributor and leader in the hiring, training, and professional guidance to their team members. The Lead will demonstrate professionalism and instill the idea of integrity and ownership on their team. The Lead is available to assist their team members and build team morale. The Lead will grow and mentor their team and handle conflicts and poor performance issues. The Lead demonstrates strong communication skills and interpersonal skills. The Lead will plan work to address Department improvements and objectives. The Lead will delegate the work and motivate the team to complete the work on time and on budget, providing regular reports to the Department management.

Leadership Responsibilities
  • Lead and supervise a small team of engineers (primarily P1 and P2, with potential oversight of P3s), supporting their professional growth and performance.
  • Mentor and develop employees to foster an inclusive and professional team environment with the central aim of building a high performing team with a focus on teamwork culture.
  • Advocate on behalf of their team members.
  • Promote OSI values, industry best practices, aligned with excellence in marine navigation.
  • Assess skills and capabilities, providing ongoing constructive feedback to ensure professional advancement.
  • Mentor team members, guide their professional development, and manage training plans to grow skills.
  • Collaborate with other Leads and Managers to ensure successful product releases and support the overall well‑being of the Software Engineering Department.
Technical Responsibilities
  • Supervise team activities and report to the ‘Manager, Software Engineering’ on a weekly basis.
  • Escalate unresolved issues and ensure team performance through regular meetings, coaching, and performance feedback (including reviews, improvement plans, and professional development plans).
  • Support the creation, maintenance, and improvement of Software Engineering processes, and training.
  • Ensure compliance with ISO 9001 and internal company policies; collaborate with internal audit and regulatory bodies.
  • Assist in scoping, estimating, and planning departmental work packages and objectives.
  • Review technical outputs and engineering documentation for quality and consistency.
  • Participate in recruitment, and onboarding.
  • May participate in compensation review processes and promotions.
  • Handle administrative duties such as timesheets, vacation approvals, and attendance tracking.Lead team meetings, one‑on‑ones, and team‑building activities.
  • Promote adherence to environmental, health, and safety procedures.
Decision Making
  • Exercises sound judgment to resolve routine to moderately complex issues.
  • Authorized to independently provide performance reviews, and skills assessments for their team.
  • Authorized to ensure adherence to best practices and procedures for the Software Engineering Department.
  • Acts with delegated authority on behalf of the ‘Manager, Software Engineering’ when required.
Qualifications

Education: Degree in Computer Science, Software, Electrical or Computer Engineering, Engineering Physics or Mathematics.

Experience
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a software engineering environment.
  • Experience leading a team of a minimum of 2 employees or more.
  • Experience working in an ISO 9001 compliant company would be an asset.
  • Experience working in the defence industry would be an asset.
Skills
  • Proven experience leading and mentoring teams, including task planning, delegation, and delivery within scope, budget, and timeline.
  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written), with the ability to lead meetings and provide constructive feedback.
  • Solid understanding of software engineering processes and documentation standards.
  • Proven track record of high performance and demonstrates ownership of all delegated tasks.
  • Effective team player with conflict resolution skills.
  • Knowledge of marine navigation systems is an asset.
Other
  • Eligible to obtain and maintain a location relevant security clearance.
  • Willingness and ability to travel.
