Your Opportunity

The Senior Analyst, Energy Markets provides expert analysis and market insight to support Capital Power’s investment, asset management, commercial, and trading decisions. This role is accountable for market fundamentals, electricity price forecasts, asset gross margin projections, and strategic market assessments across assigned North American power markets.

Responsibilities
  • Own long‑term fundamental power market forecasts (energy, capacity, ancillary services, and environmental products) for assigned regions.
  • Review, develop, and defend key market assumptions including supply, demand, fuel prices, emissions pricing, policy impacts, and cost of new entry (CONE).
  • Support asset‑level gross margin projections, dispatch modeling, and financial proformas to aid budgeting, long‑term planning, and project valuations.
  • Support business development and expansion initiatives by delivering price forecasts, dispatch analysis, and due diligence assessments for new investments.
  • Provide strategic market insights to Commercial and Supply & Trading teams to support origination, hedging, and contracting strategies.
  • Coordinate work across internal teams, manage external consultants, including scope definition, assumption review, quality control, and interpretation of results.
  • Prepare and deliver presentations and briefings to cross‑functional teams, senior management and executive teams on market outlooks, risks, and opportunities.
  • Monitor regulatory, policy, and market design developments, assess their commercial and financial impacts, and incorporate implications into price projections.
  • Design and implement market dashboards for company consumption.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
  • Degree in Economics, Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, or Commerce.
  • Master’s degree or professional designation (or progress toward one) is an asset.
  • 5+ years of experience in North American power and gas markets.
  • Demonstrated experience forecasting wholesale fundamental electricity prices and asset revenues.
  • Proven ability to translate complex market dynamics into actionable business recommendations.
Technical & Professional Skills
  • Strong understanding of power market structures and regulatory frameworks.
  • Ability to work independently, manage ambiguity, and exercise sound judgment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including executive‑level presentations.
  • Advanced quantitative and financial modeling skills (CONE, LCOE, dispatch, gross margin).
  • Proficiency in Excel, Python, and data analysis tools; exposure to market models is an asset.
