PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

As the Disability Management (DM) Specialist, your role involves working with collaborators to assist ill, injured, or disabled employees in returning to work safely and efficiently.

This position can be based in Calgary, AB, Toronto, ON, Winnipeg, MB, or Kansas City, MO.

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:
  1. Manage the DM Program in your geographic area for employees unable to perform regular duties due to occupational or non-occupational illness or injury.
  2. Encourage transparent communication with all key customers, including employees, senior management, unions, HR, health services, and insurance representatives.
  3. Ensure confidentiality of all sensitive information is maintained when developing and implementing return-to-work plans aligned with applicable laws and regulations.
  4. Evaluate functional capabilities and coordinate Independent Medical Evaluations, Functional Capacity Evaluations, and other assessments as needed.
  5. Conduct Ergonomic and Worksite Assessments to support safe job accommodations.
  6. Promote compliance with safety regulations such as the U.S. Railway Safety Act or Canadian Occupational Safety and Health standards.
  7. Review job/physical demands and develop tailored return-to-work plans in collaboration with employees, physicians, unions, and supervisors.
  8. Convene the Disability Management Team and case review meetings to ensure coordinated decision-making and progress tracking.
  9. Provide training and education to frontline staff and supervisors on Disability Management programs and effective accommodation practices.
  10. Research, develop, and implement vocational plans to support employees who cannot be accommodated locally, including job searches and transitional work placements.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
  1. Post-secondary degree, diploma, or formal education in a health-related or disability management field.
  2. Nursing Degree and/or Occupational Health Certification is preferred.
  3. 4+ years of experience in return-to-work programs, claims management, or disability management in a unionized or corporate setting.
  4. Knowledge of Human Rights Legislation, ADA, FMLA, Workers' Compensation, and return-to-work principles/practices for U.S. and Canada.
  5. Experience applying accommodation principles and vocational rehabilitation strategies for ill or injured employees.
  6. Well-developed digital literacy in tools like Word, Excel, Outlook, and HRIS systems (e.g., SAP).
  7. Proven interpersonal skills, with the ability to prioritize, meet deadlines, and work independently or in a team setting.
  8. Availability for travel (approximately 10-20% of the time).
  9. Proficiency in English; knowledge of Spanish and/or French is an asset.
  10. Knowledge of railway operations, job functions, and safety standards is considered an asset.

Management Conductor Program:
