The Waste Sector in HDR is experiencing significant growth and opportunities in both planning and facilities engineering across North America. HDR provides solid waste consulting services across Canada, primarily in Ontario, with a strong history of value-added and niche services to select clients nationwide. We are seeking a leader to grow our Solid Waste Market Sector team in Canada, building and managing a team of professionals, with skills as a seller-doer and industry expert capable of making a market difference. Our Waste Sector team aims to expand services such as circular economy, waste management planning, facilities design, strategic communication, public education, organics, extended producer responsibility, and zero waste planning, serving clients across North America with new opportunities ahead. The right candidate will enhance and grow our services across Canada, increase market share, and provide technical leadership within the sector, supporting additional hires and advancing our Waste Sector efforts across North America.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Have a deep understanding of client perceptions of technical problems and package HDR expertise as solutions.
  • Support marketing and business development efforts to craft client capture strategies.
  • Serve as Senior Project Manager for waste-related projects (seller-doer).
  • Prioritize marketing and business development efforts for maximum return.
  • Identify and develop opportunities to expand services.
  • Promote a quality culture within the sector and production teams.
  • Act as client manager for select clients, developing relationships with contacts and existing clients.
  • Lead risk management activities for contracts and projects.
  • Represent HDR at professional organizations and industry events.
  • Work with sector leads to establish growth strategies.
  • Manage and mentor the existing staff team, identifying future staffing needs.
Preferred Qualifications
  • At least 15 years of experience with regulatory agencies, proposal writing, and managing complex waste projects; team management experience is an asset.
  • Excellent communication skills for diverse audiences.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, problem-solving, and research skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple complex projects effectively.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work under tight deadlines.
  • Leadership skills supported by mentoring and coaching capabilities.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in engineering, planning, or related field.
  • Minimum of 10 years of industry experience.
  • Experience in developing strategic marketing programs for planning or engineering services.
  • Experience managing client relationships and project pursuits.
  • Experience in staff development, recruiting, and professional growth.
  • Active involvement in industry associations and maintaining a visible market presence.
  • Ability to collaborate with various regional and sector leaders.
