Job summary

KGS Group seeks a Senior Solid Waste Engineer to develop and deliver solid waste projects from proposal through design, construction and delivery, mentored by senior staff. You’ll collaborate with environmental teams and project managers across offices to ensure quality planning and execution.

Ideal candidates have 8+ years of experience, PE/Geoscientist registration, and strong knowledge of waste management facilities, reporting, and safety.

  • Strong knowledge in solid waste management and environmental legislation.
  • Excellent written and oral communication and leadership skills.
  • Willingness to travel and valid driver’s license.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver complex solid waste projects across design and project management stages.
  • Coordinate site assessments, waste audits, and modelling activities.
  • Ensure quality standards with the Quality Management team.
  • Promote safety with the Health and Safety Management team.

The Role

The Senior Solid Waste Engineer will have a key role In developing and delivering solid waste projects from the proposal stage through design, construction and final delivery. You will work on design projects that both build on your existing knowledge and expand your engineering experience through mentorship from outher senior staff. Working directly with all levels of environmental staff, from field teams to other Project Managers, Senior Staff, and with the Assistant Department Head and Department Head as required, you will engage in design development or take on project management responsibilities and provide technical input and guidance on proposals, field investigation plans, system designs, tender document preparation, contract administration, and troubleshooting. You will serve as a technical resource to ensure quality planning, execution, and documentation for solid waste management work, sometimes collaborating with teams from multiple offices.

Key Responsibilities
  • Ability to deliver projects of significant complexity, and often with competing priorities.
  • Coordinating solid waste projects including site assessment, waste audit, feasibility study, landfill gas generation modelling, waste balance modeling, engineering design, preparation of financial assurance documents, developing operational/master/capitol investment and/or emergency response plans, closure and post-closure services.
  • Facilitating coordination of multi-disciplinary work and inter-departmental activities.
  • Working with the Quality Management team to uphold quality standards and procedures.
  • Working with the Health and Safety Management team to reinforce safety as a top priority, compliance with local legislated and best practice safety needs and ensure required safety training and equipment is available to all staff.
About You
  • 8+ years of technical experience.
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering is preferred, however an Environmental Science, or Geoscience background with relevant experience will be considered. A Post-graduate degree (M.Eng., M.Sc. and/or Ph.D.) is desirable.
  • Possesses Professional Engineering or Geoscientist registration.
  • Strong technical knowledge and demonstrated experience in solid waste management.
  • Strong organization and planning skills; strong research and technical writing skills. Ability to present information concisely and clearly.
  • Experience with various types of waste management facilities, including landfill, waste transfer, composting and material and/or energy recovery is considered an asset.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to effectively lead and motivate employees and help manage project teams.
  • Strong report writing and data analysis skills and a strong focus on quality and technical excellence.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to personal and professional career development.
  • Experience and knowledge of relevant environmental legislation, regulations, codes, standards and best practices.
  • The ability to make sound, defensible decisions.
  • Experience working with Indigenous clients is an asset.
  • Ability to travel to sites as needed.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and the ability/willingness to undergo security clearance checks.
